Grealish is a good example of why it's worth persisting with young players like Nelson and Smith-Rowe by the way. After his initial break through it looked like he wasn't going to be all that special but he's starting to show what he can do now.

mo bouhafsi reckons we're trying to get kurzawa on a free, with a view to moving in june. would mean the end of kola. seems like arteta is aiming for fullbacks that are better in the build up phase. he'd be a pretty middling signing, and his injury record is sketchy

I'd take Kurzawa for free and sell Kola for money. I reckon that's a good deal for us. Kurzawa is the better player and would be a better backup/competition for Tierney, and any money we can earn will be a welcome addition this summer since we're probably looking at yet another season without Champions League.

I think the Xhaka Kola axis on the left is limiting. A better defender gives a lot more flexibility on that side. Dunno how good Kurzawa is.

man, its crazy that liverpool have one of the best right backs in the league that they produced out of their academy, and one of the best leftbacks in the league that they signed for a measly £8m from hull city.

we can talk about big money and the need for kroenke to invest more, but we've been slow to the draw on talent right here in this country, affordable talent.

Interesting. I wonder if Arteta sees him as a combo replacement for Torreira and Xhaka at the base of midfield. Those two are currently 2 bodies occupying one role.

We have two rightbacks that we literally produced out of the youth system too.

Question, Quincy, is how much is a talent gap versus a Klopp system gap?
I'm still keen to see where AMN will go. He might be behind Alexander-Arnold developmentally, but he might end up being a better defender

Some of it is definitely Klopp. But considering just how much TAA contributes to attack, saying that someone is better defensively is far from saying that they're a better fullback.

It's a bit of an irrelevant comparison though in my opinion. I don't think we want our fullbacks to attack as much as Alexander-Arnold does.

The only player worth that is relevant from an Arsenal perspective is determined by what they contribute with to our team and the philosophy we try to build our football around. I can't lie, I think Maitland-Niles is a smashing talent, and I think if we didn't have him already Arteta would have spent a lot of money trying to sign someone with similar qualities. There's no reason to be envious of Liverpool's fullbacks; we have one good Scottish player and one good English player, same as them (and that's not even counting Bellerin and Kola, who, just like AMN, literally cost us nothing). We just need to bring them up to speed and build on what we've got.

It's not like Liverpool have done this all over the pitch, it's virtually the only area where they gone with youth/bargains.

We've done alright with youth. We've got 6 academy products in our first team squad as well as the likes of Martinelli and Guendouzi. Even if they don't all prove quite good enough they'll fetch some nice fees.

Yep, it's the one part of the club that has actually been working properly, and you could argue particularly at the fullback positon where most of our players over the last two decades have been our own youth players breaking through: Ashley Cole, Clichy, Gibbs, Bellerin, Maitland-Niles... and then you have Monreal and Sagna who were brought in cheap. Tierney and Debuchy are the only ones we've spent any kind of money on.

Like I said in the Carabao cup thread, Liverpool talents are not as special as people tout and we are certainly on par, although after winning the UCL they are riding on their fame by signing a lot of special talents around like Elliot, Van De Berg etc.

TAA is an exception IMO. He is an unbelievable passer being played as a full back. One of a kind

robertson and TAA are miles better than any fullback we've produced since cashley.

my point was that our scouting department over the last decade has largely failed us. you can count 20 premier league players who are currently playing at a very high level that moved for less than £10m and we werent in on them, and that was even before our fall from CL grace.

i hope the martinelli signing is a sign that things are changing and we're back on the case. then again, in the same window we spent a fortune on pepe, so its hard to say, really

anyway, pornstein says we are signing kurzawa in this window and hoping to do it for no fee, and we've got a few other loan/low fee moves in the hopper.

I don’t agree that their roles are the same. Bruno may be able to do what Xhaka is supposed to be doing in terms of dictating the tempo of the game and transitioning from defense into attack, but we still need a player with primarily defensive instincts. Even though he’s a bit lightweight, Torreira has shown that he can be that dedicated stopper/ defensive shield, and I feel like he would be even more effective than he is presently when paired with a player like Bruno.

I’d take that 10 million jones is about to waste on his Nintendo and top it up to get this guy in if it is deemed he’s the answer to our central midfield woes.
