Take that result all day, but the same systematic problems remain. Hopefully Emery can either change things, or the individual characteristics of the new players force a change.

Martinelli scares the shit out of me. He might have some talent but he looks raw as fuck. That header which he sent back towards our six yard box. We were lucky Newcastle looked as disjointed as we did with all the new arrivals.

That's a weird take. It only took the first week because there have been tournaments this summer.

3 points is all I asked for in a difficult away game and we don't always win our first match (2nd time in 8 years IIRC) so it's positive, although I would have liked us to counter attack faster to get the 2nd rather than pass around aimlessly.

We didn't play all that well so nothing much to analyse, especially for our new signings whom will need at least another few weeks to bed in. Willock is a real positive for me. Chambers is our best defender and solid enough. The rest is just rusty, hit and miss.

Mkhi gew more into the game in the 2nd half and helped us waste a lot of time, but he is so inconsistent I struggle to think of a more frustrating player. Misplace all the simple passes then produce 2 wonderful ball to create chances. Struggle to control a ball then go on a mazy run only to weigh his pass so hard it's ungettable.

Nelson is far far far too timid. Think I have mentioned it enough in pre-season, but he really need to take more responsibility on the pitch as our winger. Don't bother comparing him with Sancho, he needs to be more useful than Iwobi first.

Thought we were very average, but obviously a great result.

I actually thought AMN started shit but grew in confidence as the game progressed.

Ceballos' cameo was poor, but he showed a few moments of potential.

Mhkitaryan is woeful, and it worries me that he got moved to the left when Pepe came on. He will still clock up a lot of minutes for us this season.

Have to say match day threads are virtually useless if you haven't watched the game. According to this thread pretty much every starter and sub was both great and useless 😆

Very happy with the result especially the clean sheet.

Chambers was very good and his partnership with Sokratis looked tailor-made for this level threat. Luiz will know that he has to earn that starting spot. AMN was a bit mixed, but was very encouraged today after a shaky pre-season. Definitely has the capability to be a very good RB, just need to be a bit more aggressive with the ball in attack. Monreal was dependable, but thought he was very subdued going forward which isolated Nelson ahead of him. Good to have around at the moment, but eagerly anticipating Tierney coming into this team.

Thought Willock, Nelson and Guendouzi gave solid rather than eye catching performances. Unlike Grealish or Zouma, just made sure they didn't make stupid mistakes which I'm more than happy with at this stage. Ceballos looked bright, but needs games to make the impact his ability promises. Also mindful that these four will have been affected by the playing conditions when coupled with the scrutiny they are now under. Not always the biggest fan of Guendouzi, but will mention that I was impressed with his positional discipline today, though a consequence of which seems to have impacted on his offensive game which was almost non-existent today and isolated our attackers more than I would have liked.

Mikhi was a mixed bag. Some very poor stuff, but helped create some of our better chances. Think he'll improve and be influential to our attack as well as polarising as the season continues.

The only strange decision I thought made, was for Emery to throw on a very raw Martinelli as a late sub. We were only 1-0 up away from home and were steadily being bypassed by Newcastle in midfield. Thought he should have brought on Luiz. While I don't believe in overly defensive subs, I worry Emery is still too gung-ho in his decision-making.

Glad we have Burnley next to ease in our new boys before the big fixtures.

Very underrated touch, the ball wasn't easy at all with Dubravka rapidly closing in on him.

AMN had some sloppy moments but generally had one of his better games. He is pretty different from Bellerin so good to have him as an option for RB.

I mean it could happen but no, I don’t think it’s very likely we will miss more than 7 first teamers at the same time very often.

When three of those first teamers are out for at least the next two months it's not an insane stretch of imagination to think we might see something like this again, though.

Well in midfield, Torreira and Ceballos will come in, in attack Laca and Pepe will come in, and in defense Luiz and Kolasinac will come in. None of those guys are long term absentees.

Holding, Bellerin and Tierney are longterm absentees with the first two still recovering from ACL tears and Tierney being 4-6 weeks away from training according to the latest update. All it takes is a knock to Auba or Maitland-Niles and suddenly there are 4-5 players out again. It's a brittle squad at the moment.

It's not even a weak team. We will see Willock and Nelson a lot this year. People saying C team needs to get real, these are all legit first teamers for us this season.

I was on a plane for most of the match. Good to know Gabriel has the potential, cos Nelson was quite disappointing from what I saw in the first half.

Does the Brazilian have a good touch, and can he dribble well? Or do his strengths lie more in off the ball movement?

Willock, Nelson Chambers, Guendouzi, Mkhi will be playing throughout the season, they just wont be starting when Ceballos, Laca, Luiz, Torreira and Pepe are ready, none of whom are long term absentees.

Seems a bit of an all rounder to me. Good physique, and mindset. Seems better at knowing how to throw defenders off balance when compared to Nelson.

Early days but he reminds me of Elano of you remember him

Thought the back 4 were all good, Chambers in particular. Oustanding assist from Maitland-Niles.

Guendouzi and Xhaka were decent. Xhaka with a load of his usual brain dead moments, but some good passes too. Guendouzi impressed me with his positional discipline today.

I thought Willock was very decent in the first 30 minutes in a role that doesn't suit him as well as the deeper midfield role. Showed good pace and great strength at times. Ragdolled Lascelles in the first half, which is no mean feat. The high tempo caught up with his in the end and he was rightfully subbed.

Nelson was also very good for most of the first half; made sure not to be sloppy with first touch and passing. Also got the better of his man numerous times. The tempo caught up with him too, but a good start, and more to come.

Mkhitaryan was dire all match barring one decent pass to Auba over the top. A real hindrance to our game right now.

Auba didn't hold it up very well, but took one of the few chances he had brilliantly well.

I'll settle for the 1-0. We won't be as weak in terms of quality and as disjointed because of new players and a lack of sharpness as that again all season.
