Agree. At the same time, I think it's clear Arteta doesn't rate him, and neither did Emery for what that's worth. Hard to say you should start him in that context. I'm more and more resigned to Pepe being yet another relic of troubled times in the Arsenal boardroom, presided over by Kroenke and his incompetent son.

I find it crazy that he wasn't brought on today. Season on the line and we don't bring on our most expensive signing ever. I know his price tag needs to be forgotten but even then he brings a threat.

Arteta praised Willian for brining some composure to our game in the final third, and that's probably as good an indicator as any as to why. Pepe is more dangerous but he's also someone who will frequently break up your attacks.

I just think that we got a little lucky and tonight turned out to be the first time in 25 games where Willian contributed with anything at all. Statistically he had to have a decent performance at some point, and that is still all it was.

He certainly hasn't brought composure in the final third in most of games where he has started or has been hauled on in the second half, and if we're chasing a goal again next week I would still back Pepe or Martinelli as much more likely to help us get it.

This was the sort of Willian we were expecting to get, nothing special, but someone relatively reliable and calm on the ball. I think it's the first time we've really seen him look like a footballer since Fulham.

And yeah don't get me wrong, I would too bring those guys on too. It was more a comment on what I think Arteta dislikes about Pepe, at least in this sort of scenario.

Yeah I think you're right too, it's what Arteta expects from him every time he puts him on. We so rarely get it in the real world though.

Absolutely. They don’t fit his preferred style.
He now needs to prove that his preferred players can win games. Can they beat Leicester and Spurs. Those two games are the benchmark.

It worked against Leeds but that was a very specific tactical selection he had clearly prepared to face them. That he's sticking with it only speaks to his own lack of confidence, though I bet he'd say its more to do with giving the players some belief.

This squad has such low lows, both individually and as a whole. We really need to raise the baseline performance level. Saka and Partey are the only ones whose form doesn't just drop like a stone every now and then.

I would add Tierney to that. He’s dependable AF. And when those guys get the ball to Auba, he delivers.

Tonight’s game actually highlighted the quality gap. It’s those players who rose to the occasion on a tough night in Athens. Edu needs to go recruit more players with fight in the summer. The whole tentative, nervy approach to the game was so late stage Wenger and an attitude we need to purge

At one point the gulf in quality between two players is big enough that the player of the preferred style should be benched for the other one - anything else is a lack of adaptability from the manager. Pépé and Willian are two such players.

Awful signing all things considered. Not because he's not talented, but we just refuse to try to get the most out of the guy.

Hire Mourinho, Simeone or Allegri and you’ll get plenty out of Pépé.
This is absolutely the problem with unstructured recruiting. We’ve pissed away so much money this past decade from haphazard recruiting leaving is with players who are incompatible with each other and their managers. You don’t see a Pépé at Leicester. The closest to a question is someone like Iheanacho and he still gets tons of utilisation
