That's why Guardiola isn't as good some say he is, in my opinion. He has that huge blind spot and has never coached a team that was comfortable and secure without 70% of the ball or against teams with players that can really hurt them on the break.

And, for me, it's why he's generally found wanting at the sharp end of the Champions League and in games like today.

The man cannot coach defence and he doesn't appreciate the value of good defenders enough to compensate.

TBF City have been playing like this all game. It's just that now Pool aren't trying to attack at all, and took their chances.

They've been grinding like mad recently. Away from home they're vulnerable but hanging in. I hope they'll get caught in one of those away games soon, and surely by season's end.

Sterling has Arnold on toast, but the rest of them aren't worth a damn.

I'm actually worried about the unbeaten season, hope someone can stop them soon. Title is surely theirs.

Klopp is an amazing coach, Dortmund used to blow away teams like this when they won the league twice and reach the UCL final

Sorry mate, would love to but I'm not that bothered by the PL anymore. Refereeing hasn't been this bad in ages and Arsenal are shit, so why should I care what other financially doped up teams are doing especially with the Liverpool wankfest in the media

I don’t know if you saw, but I had a post yesterday on why he’s successful. He coaches to win leagues. He builds consistently good attacking teams that thrive on system stability. When you have high quality players that’s great for dominating the bottom 75% of the league and winning the title. It’s less successful for beating the best teams consistently and thus less likely to win big cup ties.

Unfortunately Liverpool have got a fantastic structure together and are reaping the rewards of that. Look the strangest team by far and difficult to look past them for the title. Laporte seems to have really destabilised City's balance

I agree to a large extent, but I'm sure you've heard me bleat on enough about squad depth to know I would offer that as a bigger factor in Guardiola's remarkably consistent point tallies over the past decade or more. And why that counts for little when two big clhbs meet qith their best XIs (obviously how many of them you are able to field toward the end of a season will be affected by your squad depth over the course of it. And Guardiola usually fares well on that front: He doesn't usually lose because the big hitters are out, but because his teams are ALWAYS poor defensively and the talent is too heavily weighted toward the top end of the team).

Financially doped or not, they still spend a fuck ton of money (budget for referees must be astronomical!).

But Klopp had the good sense to spend £200m on Alisson, van Dijk and Fabinho. That's what's changed things for them, and for Klopp.

Every football fan and his dog knew those three were world class, top drawer players, but Liverpool went and bought them. 🙁

(And I'll eat my hat if they're not doped in the other sense of the word, but so, I suspect, are all the top teams anyway)

Well, yeah and I give Klopp a lot of credit for that. A lot of managers and clubs don't end up making that move either because they're trying to be too cute or would rather spend the money elsewhere.

I'm still processing my feeling about exactly how good Liverpool are but Klopp is a very m, very good manager. And I don't just mean for what he brings on the pitch.

Fair. That said, I do think that there is strategic coherence to what he is doing. He is probably making trade offs - it makes sense to optimize to recruit for a team that delivers his vision of total football. All the players from goalie to striker are selected to retain possession, maximize shot chances and minimize time the opponent has on the ball. Works most of the time. He might think that recruiting and coaching for other traits and tactics would sub-optimise Plan A more than any benefits he as a coach might derive. So, yes, it’s an obvious blind spot, but Plan A is so good he’s still the dominant coach of our time.

Exactly, Liverpool were a defensive mess before that. Klopps saw his own short comings and filled those positions with big signings. He knows he can trust VVD especially to sort out their defence most of the time. This is why I'd welcome a defensive coach if we change mid season. If you keep it simple you can trust our attackers to score goals, we need someone to work on the defenders though, they're utterly clueless.

(And I'll eat my hat if they're not doped in the other sense of the word, but so, I suspect, are all the top teams anyway)

We must be on the wrong stuff then.

Pool never seem to have key injuries to multiple players at once. Its always 1 player here or there, and they've enough depth to cover comfortably. Guys like lovren who used to be a punchline can come in and look comfortable. At this point the title is theirs, we just need them to lose a game
