if its truly a language issue, then it is completely and totally insane where we are right now.
if i got tapped to lead a company in germany and 95% of the employees didnt really understand english, and i could not speak more than 5 words in german, i would not try to lead meetings or explain processes in german. because...well, its fucking obvious why i wouldnt.
are none of his trusted people truly bilingual? did the club not think this might be an issue? if he was a brilliant polyglot and he could have mastered english in 6 months, then it would have been a non-issue, but if he can't explain what he wants the team to do, how is the team supposed to play in a cohesive manner? i get wanting to learn the language and wanting to give it everything youve got. in the above example, id work my ass off to learn german so i could speak in german, but i wouldnt conduct meetings and try to lead them in german until i was fluent in the language and i was sure that everyone could understand me.
as someone who does work with a number of global teams with people from europe and south america, im often in meetings where it is difficult to understand what someone is asking either because of their attempt to speak english, their accent, or both. if i dont understand something, i try to get them to clarify what they meant. i never just take an unclear statement and just wing it. thats nuts.
