I've heard the protagonist line whipped out but I'd forgotten about the full quote. I never imagined it would result in 5 at the back with 2 defensive midfielders and the dearth of chances created that we've seen.

Reading the below back now, a few points really do ring true, particularly the pragmatism and in-game management.

Ah the famous two defensive midfielders. Shame they're nowhere to be seen when we really need them

If you use them in a defensive capacity they're defensive midfielders, just like wingbacks become defenders if you allow them to get pinned down far enough.

Can't find that yet - I know Emery has a better record in games against our top rivals and a slightly better record away from home compared to Wenger's final season.

But if we accept that base performance is the cornerstone to building a successful team then those numbers are worrying. I'm honestly shocked that we've become worse at defending, I really didn't think that would be possible after Wenger left.

Points from those 43 games would be interesting, and probably quite easy to find. My guess is that Emery gained more points so it would ruin the narrative of that chart so wasn't provided.

That being said, we knew we were winning games last year (that unbeaten streak early) when it seemed we were getting lucky, but to me, it's more the lack of improvement or visible progress that is the most disturbing.

I think we're feeling the pains of constant CB and FB turnover. Not trying to give Emery a pass here, but two years ago we had a backline featuring Koscielny, Bellerin and Monreal - all of whom were performing above their current replacements.

Sokratis is getting by on his rugged physique, Luiz isn't a calming force (scary when paired with Xhaka) and AMN/Kolasanic aren't defenders....shit, the two of them have admitted as much.

43 games is a more than decent enough sample size.

And the results is shocking. Regressed in every single department out there despite having a much better team on paper and playing pragmatic football or in other words, results first football.

Its pretty easy to look at least season vs the one before. We failed to get top 4 but we finished with more points and much closer to the CL spots. Plus we made the EL final instead of the semis. We fell short but it was undeniably better albeit not as much as we'd have liked.

Just had a quick look and both managers would have 78 points after those 43 games.

Despite having a better squad we have not moved forward under Emery which is what worries me. After 43 PL games we look even more a shambles defensively than we did under Wenger. He is really struggling to find the balance defensively, I think in attack we will get by but not doing enough defensively.

Points don’t really ruin the narrative regardless, the stats listed paint a more accurate picture of what’s happening in those games.

I think the Watford performance has been significant in the it seems to have changed the narrative for the season. Whereas previously we were looking forward to a potential challenge for 3rd place, now the focus has switched to Emery rather than the season.

The Watford performance has provided the perfect scenario for all these posts re team stats both in general terms in the PL and also head to head v AW. The general consensus seems to be that Emery will not be leading us into next season regardless of the outcomes of this season, and the biggest question seems to be as to if he will survive until the Jan transfer window, let alone the remainder of the season.

One little thing that bugs me regarding Emery.
He stands on the sidelines and gestures away, shouts away.
It drives me crazy that he treats his players like they don't know what they are doing out there.
Maybe they need that direction, but give it a rest.
It borders on some kind of manic, heightened energy.
