If I've understood correctly then out of those 36 teams:
1 team on merit of having won the CL
1 team on merit of having won the EL
30 teams on merit of their league position
4 teams on merit of their positions in the European competitions (this is the new part)

So it's not like any teams are in it by default. The reverse of your example would be that one team gets to the CL final while the other got knocked out in the group stage, yet only the latter gets into the CL because they came 4th while the team that got to the final ended up 5th. It'll still be based on performances, only that now there would be some places handed out based on performances in the EL/CL as well.

Article is actually hinting that we could be in CL even if we ended up being relegated as long as not more than 4 teams above us in the coefficient also did not qualify.

Yup. Been like that for a long, long time. Gone are the days where a Porto, Red Star or Steaua had at making it past the R16 let alone having a chance of winning it.

In fairness to UEFA they're the ones pushing back against that sort of concept, those leaked plans post lockdown would have given a bunch of teams permanent membership of a European Super League, this is just UEFA's attempt to keep them at bay.

It is what it is. But the proposed format is awful, if you want to manufacture more games surely there is a better system?

This single tie league format will surely kill the repetitiveness of the Champions League draw
The 3 coefficient qualifiers is a small concession to keep the system from collapsing immedately and the Super League happening. I think these guys know that any given year, most big teams will make the Champions League due to the incumbency effects. This is mainly an English problem where the Premier league money makes that league much more competitive, so each year 1 or 2 extra clubs can go in. That seems reasonable

Huge win for Brentford today away at Reading. It sends them to the top of the league. I sincerely hope for the sake of their fans they don't stuff it up again this season. They deserve to come up and I hope they manage it.

I have to say I don't mind this at all. The complaints about creating a "closed league" don't seem valid - you can still qualify if you place in the qualifying spots. It also mitigates the effects of cash influxes from billionaire owners, so clubs that want to buy what other clubs built need to wait a bit longer and work a bit harder. In a system that's already totally fucked, this seems to provide an adequate solution for now.

I don't mind the proposed changes either. An even better idea though would be to exclude top division teams from domestic shit like the league cup to spare them the extra strain, and then just invite in the whole upper table in the 3-4 top leagues to Champions League (which is probably due a name change anyway to more aptly reflect its nature).

If you absolutely have to have a European cup I reckon that's the only way you stop it from becoming a fenced off competition for a few elites whose dominance no one will ever break.

I dislike the use of historic coefficients for placings, unless they're for wildcard entries. Just combine the UEL and UCL places and this should be fine. Always good to see the odd entrants like Leicester, Everton, Wolves etc.

The swiss rounds I'm 50-50 about. A lot of whining goes on about swiss-based matchups, and you can get matchup luck. But it's been a tried an tested format elswehre.
