Martinelli will always look better against stronger opposition and always look better when we're front running.

Ideal conditions for him versus a Madrid side that both fancies itself to out-punch any opposition and desperately needed to score.

Great player returning to great form, but we'll need more threat to get more out of him against low and mid blocks.

Someone in the match thread called him the best Brazilian on the pitch and I don't think anyone would disagree with that. He is playing with a lot more assurance than he was a couple of months back, just being efficient and not forcing the issue.

Recent weeks he’s stepped up, definitely finding his form and showing what he is about. That goal was brilliant, showing that pace after all the running he’s done all game and then cool as you like for the finish.

Big Willie He’s been doing well last few weeks but still has to prove if he can really show he is back to the levels of 2/3 years ago. I want him to continue his form of last 4 weeks but I wouldn’t say he is ‘back’ just yet.

flobaba totally agree the players we've been lacking is those able to deliver consistent quality over the whole season and unfortunately Martinelli over the last 2 years hasn't been able to do that so we can't take the risk on just relying for him if we want to win titles.

Seriously though, despite Martinelli’s recent excellent form, I would be amazed if Arteta didn’t sign his replacement, or at least someone who can give him strong competition this summer. We know how he likes to improve every position, regardless of how little because the margins. Ramsdale didn’t look terrible, in fact at a time he was seen as world class and Englands best. Raya came in to the chagrin of most fans, but the signing has been justified. Benny Blanco, I kept on telling y’all was a level below requirements, same with Zinchenko. I was laughed at until Timber and Lewis Skelly came on and pushed them back in the pecking order.

Martinelli is next. Apologies in advance to his fans. But you know I’m right. 🙂

flobaba I think the forward roles just naturally need more quality depth. Ramsdale left the team entirely. Martinelli will probably find himself down the pecking order if Williams comes, but you will still see plenty of him. Would be surprised if a fit Martinelli played fewer than ₃₂ league games even with Williams around

Martinelli's been in good form, but there isn't anyone in April 2025 who would say Martinelli is Arsenal's best wide player, or best forward. So it's no surprise talk of improving Arsenal's attack takes in talk about improving on Martinelli.

Zinchenko - I dont think anyone has argued about him. We could all see from the beginning that he was just the first step in upgrading the squad. He was always good with the ball, completely suspect without it/terrible positioning.

White - I would still argue the fact that he is a level below requirements. Do I think Timber is better? At this stage, yeah. But if we still had White starting at RB, i dont think we would be looking at a serious downgrade from Timber the way we see Zin as a serious downgrade from either MLS or Calafiori.

As for Martinelli's place, no one in their right mind would think Martinelli's place is 100% secure the way Saka's is. Upgrading/supplementing the LW spot is something we have all said we want to do for 3 seasons now. But we need to get a striker in first. That has got to be the first objective

It seems a bit like maybe only me and @USArsenal watched the game yesterday.. Personally, allowing for shit opposition, it was interesting to see how Ben White's return seemed to grease the wheels of the right hand side triangles again. Odegaard looked more himself and Saka was cooking, at least until that prick booted him.

Timber is quality and will deservedly start the PSG game, but let's not pretend Benny Blanco has no use. Lumping him in with Zinchenko is ridiculous, but I'm sure you know that @flobaba.

RocktheCasbah I know, I know, I'm harsh on Benny. I feel he is lacking just a smidge in two regards: 1) calmly passing out of the back/ out of midfield when he is involved in our possession game on the sidelines. Too often the play breaks down because he cant process and find the quick open pass early enough, or he just boots it out. 2) And this is the more critical piece, he isn't a lockdown 1 v1 defender. He's good and does a decent job, but Timber is elite at it. Arteta prefers his fullbacks to be good defenders first and foremost.

Ben's a fantastic squad option who doesn't cause us much of a drop off in defensive strength.

If we can upgrade on Martinelli to the same degree or better as we have Benny, then we are going to be near unstoppable next term

Timber is a better defender, and probably a better all-around player. White makes our attacking and transition play more dynamic.
