We didn’t really have a problem when we built a great team for the invincibles. Once in a while, Vieira’s balls would itch but most players were happy because they looked around them and realised they were surrounded by the absolute best. Notice now how there are no murmurs from Liverpool. It’s all from the unfortunate, uncompetitive clubs like us.

Hope he grabs a few more goals and games this season, seems to have fizzled a little lately. Which is never surprising with young players, and especially those that achieved the peaks he did early on.

Agree that the goals have dried up a bit but his general performance level is decent. It's a good sign if this is his base level

I think he's playing even better now than he did back when he scored most of those goals. He'll start getting them from the wing soon too.

Mike Workrate Arteta will endorse last night’s performance by Martinelli. He was supercharged, tearing down the flank, chasing down every loose ball and beating the Pompey player to it. Linked up well with Saka and Ceballos. Just an impressive performance. He and Saka need to be the core on the left with Aubameyang in the centre. That leaves two guys fighting for main sub in the middle (which I think the manager is trying to avoid) but let’s rather unbalance the bench than the starting lineup. No?

i missed the portsmouth game, but he actually looked the opposite to me in his 2020 starts. less decisive, more in line with a rookie getting his feet wet. there's plenty to work with but i'm not sure if i'm looking at elite potential, or someone with a ceiling of say pedro

No, this guy will be g o o d.

It's true his 2020 games were not the level he played earlier, but I could see yesterday why some see good signs. He had that aggression and decisiveness back, though the main missing element - this murderer in front of goal vibe - does not seem to be back.

Could be confidence, age fluctuations, role switching or actually the result of coaching. The hard work seems natural (he was always fighting for everything with that unbelievable engine and fierce competitiveness) but the focus could be guided with emphasis on specifics directing him in directions not necessarily natural to him (I think we saw glimpses of that yesterday, and that could explain adjustment time needed).

but he needs to go back to looking for goals, from wherever he's playing, and I'm sure he will.
