Since his contract runs until 2024 (?) and his value surely won't decrease we shouldn't even entertain the idea unless he won't sign a new contract by 2022. I suspect he'll sign a new one sooner rather than later though, he's probably on a relatively low salary.

We can’t have it both ways. Berating the club for the Ashley Cole and Suarez debacles, whilst acting like an extra 10-20k a week for a young player who is producing the goods now is excessive. His head will be turned if he keeps hearing how much of a generational talent he is from the likes of Klopp, and he doesn’t feel adequately compensated here. To stay competitive we’ll have to pay whatever the market demands. If it’s 30k, then we’ll have to bite the bullet and offer him something close to it.

And the captain’s armband.

Yup, he’s that rare type of person who’ll always try to get higher and fully believe he’s worth it. That’s (part of) what makes him so special.

I agree there’s not particular reason to believe he’ll be loyal forever - that is quite rare, unless some special connection to the club develops with time, and that too is only meaningful if it comes with achievements. This boy won’t stay in a B level team if he can go higher.

I think we should offer him 30 only because we could then go back and offer 50 at the end of the year.... and continue renewing his contract every two months, if possible 🙂
Keep this dude always with 5 yrs remaining, that should be our goal.

Honestly, it's the smart move, assuming you have smart player recruitment and dev. Players come and go, and there are loads of talented players out there. Letting players hold you to ransom is small time. Besides, we have big financial power (and even more that is still untapped).

Players who perform should have their contracts looked at and improved regularly. If his stock continues to rise he should be paid what he's worth.

Definitely, need to be proactive with these things. It probably saves you money in the long run too if you can stay just ahead of the curve.

It's fair (pay the player according to their ability & reward progress)
and it's smart (extend whenever can, use whatever excuse for that, and most importantly - keep the player happy always).

perhaps the idea if upping the salary in small steps both saves money and helps keep the players happy and head not twisting. But getting it wrong there is not worth it, at least when the player is of the mega talent type.

We need to nurture the Arsenal love in this boy, and hope it (along with improved team achievements and titles) will suffice in fending off the inevitable bigger club and money lure.

I'm hoping the fact he was on trial (at the likes of Barca(?) and Man Utd) and wasn't picked up (before we signed him without a trial?), will work in our favour when the Euro Elite come knocking on his door.
