Can’t wait to see what he looks like in our brand new adidas jersey! Come on!
Yacine Brahimi

i don't rate zaha tooo highly too, makes it even sadder....
But have you got any solutions to how we'd finance more expensive players?
I have no opinion on Brahimi specifically but can understand the logic, particularly given the struggles we're having on agreeing fees for some of our primary targets (eg. Tierney).
considering we're willing to spend 40 million on zaha according to latest reports, i don't think we're as poor as we're being made out to be.
zaha for 40, tierney for 20+, and some other dudes for <30-40m. seems like we're up to 100m at this point. i'd take zaha, tierney, saliba, martinelli or any cb at this point. ziyech would be nice too

Selling some of the ones we've got would be a good start. Maybe we've painted outselves into a corner with Mustafi, but what is Chambers and Elneny and a few others still doing on our books?

Boring free transfer aside if he can play he is prob better than what we have on the wing at the moment (Iwobi, Mhki).
I suppose if we're looking for any upside to this rumour, it seems like Brahimi's last season at Porto was one of the best ones in his career, stats-wise.
I think the small upside he might have over Iwobi is going to be offset by the fact that he's almost 30 and has never played in England before though. Telling someone to adapt to a more athletic environment at the exact moment when their physical decline has begun is a tall ask, especially when they've been coasting in a two-bob league like the Portuguese for the last six years.
Yeah, we can sell but the names mentioned are relative short change in terms of what we could get.
Any sales we'd have to make to fund a Zaha (or someone similarly priced) would majorly disrupt our team.
@[deleted] - maybe you're right, bit history suggests otherwise. The Zaha move is odd but we'll if it comes to anything or if it's just posturing.
If we had £40 million to shop around with as a base budget, and will gain roughly £10 million from Ospina and Bennacer, then selling Chambers for around £20 million would leave us with £70+ million. That's almost double the funds we set out with. I don't think it's short change, and I don't think it disrupts the team in any discernible way since he literally wasn't a part of it last season.
If we really are skint then all the more reason to actually start selling off superfluous players. How else are we going to get any business done this summer?
I don't disagree with the notion that we should sell off players. But getting to c. £70m would not leave us much left over if we were to spend £60m on Zaha. We're splitting hairs potentially but I just think we'd have to sell more prized assets one way or another to enable this. And Zaha isn't the man to do that for in my head.
I agree Don, but leave Zaha out of it for now. The question was how we'd finance more expensive players. I think we at the very least have to raise funds where we can before we start to ponder whether to sell anyone who's integral to the team. Things are moving too slowly this summer for my liking.
To be fair we have reduced the wage bill significantly already
The fact that we still need to shift a lorry load speaks volumes to the state the squad was in

Yeah, agree that we will need to sell one way or another. And that's undoubtedly something I'm okay with.
Will just close my eyes and open them again in a month or so...where after several failed bids and no signed players, we'll probably offer Palace £40m + Carl Jenkinson.
Still not buying the 40m figure. All that talk of wages etc conveniently forgetting we shaved off a cool 300-500kpw or so already in Cech Welbeck Ramsey etc
Then the Ornstein talk of stuff "getting ugly". Whatever happened to his boring neutral Communist party speaker tone. Suspect he lost his inside man with the egghead and is now shithousing his way through the window
I say fuck Ornstein. Even with stingy Stan theres no fucking way we have only 40m ffs
Is Zaha a Super Talent? Wengs always said we have big bucks set aside for one of those

Ornstein did not say the figure is 40m.

"There are some suggestions it’s around the £40 million mark depending on what European competition Arsenal are involved in. I’ve been told it could be nearer £100 million to spend. That would factor in salaries as well although it will depend on the competition they get in. There needs to be intelligent recruitment. It’s all well and good having £100 million to spend but it’s how intelligently they spend that will be key. It won’t be the level of money that some clubs will have."
It’s gonna be a case of “you’ll have your Yacini Brahimi and Gary Cahill and you’ll bloody well like it!”

"Depends on the competition they're in" means this was written before the EL final?

Given their budget of around £45m, no owner investment & targets for other positions also being pursued, Arsenal would need Crystal Palace to reduce the asking price and/or raise significant funds through sales, in addition to (normal) staggered payment structure #AFC #CPFC #Zaha
The 'links' to the likes of Brahimi and Perisic make sense if they're simply a stop gap until the ikes of Nelson & Co are deemed ready to take a starting role. They make even more sense in that they are both the 2 different types of wide men that we are looking for with one being technical on the ball and the other hard working and can play across the line.
Lastly if they enable us to spend elsewhere in the team it makes even more sense.

The wage bill is now irrelevant with the FA restrictions now ended. As The Swiss Ramble points out our wage bill is lower than all the other top6 bar TH = it's not the $ but more the overpaying the likes of Ozil, Mkhi, Kola.
Which FA restrictions ended?
STCC, which restricted wage bill from rising by more than 7M + revenue increases not linked to the television deal.
Wasn't aware of that thanks. Why did they lift that rule, thought that was supposed to iron out wage spikes and irresponsible spending.
Also what's oftys excuse now, pretty sure he referred to that rule most of the time whenever someone complained about the pathetic investment levels at the club

True my quote is from February and it explicitly states that there are many variables which could change the total figure which could see it potentially rise all the way to £100 million.
"Depends on the competition they're in" is simply one of those variables.
Another i assume would be player sales with the jackpot being Ozil.
At this moment in time we have sold zilch so his guess that we are at lower end of the 40m to 100m scale.
Your 45m quote seems to be about our valuation of Zaha which is understandable for a premiership-ready forward player. Guys like Ziyech, though better, may need a year or 2 to get used to the league and new style of play. Also, if you add Tierney and Saliba to that, we get closer to the 100m as his February quote stated.
Better to put twitter aside and read the full transcript of what he said
