Hundred percent. There's an abundance of good defenders in Europe, and most of them are in their early or mid-20s too. Everyone's picking up a couple except Arsenal.

I agree; there are talented young centrebacks everywhere, but we just picked one of those up in Saliba. What we need now is a guy with experience and top quality, ready to come in and take charge of our defence. Hence the "van Dijk MKII" reference.

I don't see that defender out there. Not one that we could afford anyway.

I don't know how good Boateng is now but just 2 years ago he was arguably the best CB in europe.

I wouldn't mind him as a stop gap measure if we blow our budget on Zaha.

Manolas was available for £30m. Kevin Vogt is another option. Boateng is fine too.

I'd rather we gave Chambers the minutes. At least, he has potential upside. Boateng is a player on a downward trend. I can live with Chambers, Holding, Sokratis and a new CB. Get rid of Monreal, Koscielny and Mustafi on a free transfer. Get rid of Emery as well, if he wants to play 5 at the back.

The good centre backs are there at 20-30m pounds. But do we presently have the money to strike a deal that would work for the selling team? That’s what matters.

Emery is not trying to lose.
He is playing Mustafi because he has no better choice as the others cannot stay fit.
Mavropanos and Medley are not ready.
He is playing 3 at back because our fullbacks cannot defend properly.

Yeah. We should abuse the coach for the things he can control like the formation, tactics, etc. but if he goes into the season with Mustafi, that’s likely out of his control. No sane manager would want Mustafi. Including the ones you guys want us to sell him to 😆

There’s no reason he has to go into the season with Mustafi. There are plenty of players available who wouldn’t be making the same silly costly mistakes. Even Gary Cahill is available.

if we are going to play this dumbshit 5 at the back formation, we need 6 centerbacks. we have 1 healthy decent CB (sokratis), holding coming back from injury, and chambers coming back from being relegated. our captain is on strike. and mustafi is 10x worse than senderos ever was.

He was available a week ago but has moved to Napoli now. For less than what we just spent on Saliba too.

Plenty of similar players out there though. We have Sokratis for experience already; just get someone as good as you possibly can. Saliba doesn't count because he's not going to be here this season. We need to find someone who will be.
