Those loans won't be free and will not have the option of instalments.

Also, I'd rather not invest in someone like Zagadou who is very raw when we are already making a commitment to Saliba and Holding is still very young as well.

Problem is I can't think of one centreback that is even somewhat realistic and good enough to be the centreback we've longed for.

I have seen tentative links to Jerome Boateng in the last fews days: He was "van Dijk" before van Dijk was "van Dijk". 😆

He's old and injury prone, but maybe we could get a year or two out of him if he was enthused by a new challenge? He's allegedly on a similar wage to Koscielny so we could see it as swapping him in for that senior centreback role.

I just don't see the quality out there otherwise.

Thought of Boateng myself. He was clearly going through the motions at Bayern because of their piece of shit management whoring him around for ages now and definitely not in his prime any longer but on his day he's still class. Wasn't that long ago that he was better than van Dijk himself

Turning 31 this year so he's not ancient either, plus should be available for peanuts. I'd try a two year contract if there's nothing else until the window closes

I think the club have looked around for a future world class defender and come up with Saliba. As I said, there isn't another guy like van Dijk at 26 sitting at a middling club waiting to show how good he is.

A stop-gap like Boateng might be our best option.

There is an absolute shit ton of defenders we could sign this summer regardless of whether we're looking at the long or short term. It's clear to me that we have no interest in doing so though. That's why we're locking horns with a soon-to-be 34 year old Koscielny. We were shutting up shop over a month before the transfer window ended because we knew we weren't going to bring anyone in.

Would be hugely disappointing if we fail to address the central defense in this window. Unless the thinking is Holding is coming along much faster then we all know and is going to pick up right where he left off last term before the injury, which is unlikely.

We have to bring in a quality experienced player ASAP to stabilize things back there. We just have to. It would be another wasted season otherwise.

Its easy to say we need another quality, experienced CB but when we end up with another Sokratis whats the point? May as well just playing Holding and Sok for a season until Saliba comes in.

Yeah. Worried a Boateng deal turning out like Lichsteiner in worst case scenario. Would prefer a more PL ready option like Lascalles and am thawing to the idea of Cahill on a one year deal as an alternative until Saliba arrives. All on the assumption that we manage to flog Mustafi somewhere.

Fabian Schaar was much better than Lascelles last season, and that guy is Mustafi with a good long ball.

Flipping hell, centreback is the position we need most by far, and there is such a dearth of really good ones out there right now.

I know. Really small pool of half decent CBs around that look ready for a step up and any that do seem to have exorbitant price tags. Its why we are looking at the youth market hoping to get lucky.

On the plus side, if there are so few good options out there, means that others are not strong in that department either so investing in our forward line or in a DM might be better value.

I reckon there are more talented centre backs around now than there have been in years. Milenkovic, Diakhaby, Kabak (think he moved to Schalke already though) Nunez or Demiral all seem attainable and plenty young and talented and that's without starting to consider the gorillion French centre backs that seem to pop up every hour. All 22 or younger too

Also I still reckon we could get one of Barcelona's defenders, if not Umtiti or Lenglet at least Todibo who looks supremely gifted in every facet of his game, physique acceleration aggression ability on the ball even dribbling. Seriously if Raul could pull this off with him and Saliba we'd probably be set for a decade

if boateng had his left leg amputated, id still prefer him at the back on £120k per week over mustafi. watching mustafi play for our team makes me sick to my stomach. i can barely watch. i cant take it for another season or four or however many years are left on his lifetime contract here
