I don't know where this whole thing has come from, historically most transfer fees were paid over the contract length. The only time I can think of upfront payment was if a bargain could be had as club was desperate or when you pay a release clause and you have to pay upfront.

because it's the new buzzword(s) of the summer.

ozil's transfer was 24m euros in 2013, then 15m in 2014 and 5m in 2015 and then 6m (1m each time we achieve UEFA qualification) in top ups. and those numbers are from the actual agreement, not some media report.

The point being that value was front loaded. Arsenal are trying to take chances and spread value across the contract on small transfer amounts. If you look at Saliba I think we’ve made a trade off - pay more so we can spread fees over a long time.

but st etienne also got to keep the player for a year. that's worthy of significant compromise and he's 18. we're obviously not trying to do a deal like that with celtic. i wouldn't be surprised if they aren't interested in 13.5m in '19, 8.5m in '20 and 4m in '21 (or 4m in UEFA clauses).

I hope the mods re-open the Zaha thread so we can go back to reading Tierney news in the Tierney thread.

In typical Arsenal luck, Celtic's new LB Bolingoli was injured in their friendly today.

IIRC we did the same last season regarding a release clause = we paid more than we needed to so as to be able to pay less up front = Torreira?

EDIT - may have been for Kola or even both?

And I suspect you need to pay a lot more in those instances. The cost of capital in football must be high. There is so much uncertainty. You have no idea where your club will finish season to season, what will happen with players, what will happen with sponsorships/tv deals etc. So when you start asking teams to accept a larger share of value in later years, you will get penalised. They will put a massive discount rate on cash flow on later years and you will end up paying massive transfer fees. It looks smart to not have to pay up front but you could end up hampering yourself

I saw about this Celtic festival thing 10 days or so back and that Tierney wasn't listed as going in all the promo stuff despite literally every other Celtic player being involved, other injured players going along too, and Tierney being the one all the fans want to see.

I don't know why this guy says "I'm led to believe", like it's some sort of mystery. Celtic put out a detailled itinerary listing exactly who was going to be in attendance and what was going and Tierney was nowhere to be seen.

Just another reason to show that despite all the bluster from Celtic they know full well he's very likely going.

And Celtic spent on another CB again. I think they are well prepared that he will leave, just need to see who will bite.

The only thing people on Reddit say is that Ornstein follows the guy who tweeted this. 😆

"The" Celtic Park? Celtic will now concentrate on replacement fullback? Didn't they already pick up Boli? Apparently he was injured in the last game but it was just sickness during the game and not a football related injury and should be ready for their next game.

Anyways there is too much wrong with the tweet, Ornstein followed or not, for me to believe it.

Looks like it's true. Celtic ITKs are saying this as well

Felt confident for yonks that this will happen

Saw a short clip of Tierney training with Celtic today. The lads well stocky

Yep, he's a strong, stocky bloke. Got those old school fullback, Stuart Pearce-style, tree trunk legs. Should help him adjust to Premier League football.

From what I've read, his ability to get up and down non-stop is one of his best qualities.

The intensity of the Premier League will be a step up but there’s absolutely nothing to worry about with him physically. He’s quick, strong and aggressive.

Stylistically he looks similar to Chilwell but perhaps slightly more comfortable on the ball

Tricky I sense you’re a little bit rejuvenated as a fan this window

Great name for a jersey, one solid season and I’ll back it

That's just the source I posted yesterday, posted by Gurjit. But yeah, let's hope it's done.

I absolutely am, mate.

All I want from Arsenal is that they set high standards and use all their resources to compete. Ambition and effort to try and constantly be better than the day before. Give me that at my club and I will support and defend them to anyone and everyone.

And I really think that's what we're seeing: Owners in KSE, specifically Josh Kroenke, that are excited and enthused by the fact that they now own the club and are able to do a lot more with it than the previous situation with the demigod Wenger still at the club and only majority ownership. Sanllehi, a guy with passion and a background of excellence; he's what we've needed at this club since Dein was kicked out. Then there's Edu, who seems a clever, switched on guy that isn't used to failure and has a passion for the club.

These guys mean business, and I'm loving it.

This window has been great fun because of it (as I type this a mate has just sent me the Ornstein tweet about an agreement with Lille for Pépé!). The club are aligned with the fans for the first time in a long time. They want to win and to improve weak spots in the team, and buy exciting emerging players just like the fans do. It's just fucking great.

I know the club has sucked the life out of us for a very long time, remember that long old post I wrote a while back about the state of the club? I depressed myself and lots of y'all with it. But I urge you all now you to get on board, support the club and the people running it. Try and have some fun again. If it all goes tits up, you're only back to where you were anyway. And if the club are trying as I am saying they are, but get it wrong, then they'll come again anyway with new ideas and new people. Failure from Sanllehi down to Emery and the coaches won't last long when everything is under scrutiny because you're trying to win.

Up The fucking Arsenal, I say.

I don't think mustafi, Sokratis or ageing want away Kos are good enough in defence and that's an area that needs to be improved or it will cost us. I find it odd they haven't addressed are most glaring weakness.

Chambers and Holding will surprise you 😉

It's about time. Having a single owner will go a long way. That 10 year ownership battle is probably the single biggest thing that held us back as it destroyed incentives for investors to make decisions and commit capital. It left us in limbo, and probably contributed to Wenger's series of one-year deals and our rolling plans in lieu of proper squad building.

If we complete our business this summer, then we will have added in Tierney, Saliba, Pepe, Martinelli 4 young players with high ceilings. This actually builds on last year's haul of Guendouzi, Torreira and Leno and signals an intent to overhaul the squad, working towards creating longterm value.

When you take that plus the new structure, yes, that's worth getting excited about.

We are still after a CB. There is no credible links to Pepe at all for entire summer and in 48 hours everything changed. We are probably working on a secret deal for a good CB.

Ceballos deal proceeded as fast as it gets too.

Ideally we would get 2 new CB this window but it's probably too much to ask. New CB, Sokratis, Holding, Chambers, Mavropanos with Monreal as backup could suffice for 3rd place depending on the quality of the CB we sign. Important to ship out Mustafi though.

I have got to say, this post made me smile.

We all care about the club in our own way, or we certainly do not go through what we have the last few years, and post on here.

Hopefully over the next few windows, we go about really trying to complete the squad. We will have a few misses, as well as hits along the way. At least we are giving it a fucking go.

I wonder if this deal will accelerate now that the club has landed the winger they were chasing, a deal which would clarify what money is left in the piggy bank

Not to forget we still have Bielik at this point as well.
This is why I don't think CB was a priority ahead of locking down a top class wide attacker for this season.
That said we still have time remaining to now close the Tierney deal and then possibly look for a similarly structured deal for a CB.

BINGO - not to forget we just sold Amaechi for a couple of mill that also helps.

We haven’t claimed Pépé yet, mate. Until it’s on Arsenal. Com.....
