'Reports' Palace now want the entire fee paid up front.

I don't know where this whole thing has come from, historically most transfer fees were paid over the contract length. The only time I can think of upfront payment was if a bargain could be had as club was desperate or when you pay a release clause and you have to pay upfront.

because it's the new buzzword(s) of the summer.

ozil's transfer was 24m euros in 2013, then 15m in 2014 and 5m in 2015 and then 6m (1m each time we achieve UEFA qualification) in top ups. and those numbers are from the actual agreement, not some media report.

The point being that value was front loaded. Arsenal are trying to take chances and spread value across the contract on small transfer amounts. If you look at Saliba I think we’ve made a trade off - pay more so we can spread fees over a long time.

but st etienne also got to keep the player for a year. that's worthy of significant compromise and he's 18. we're obviously not trying to do a deal like that with celtic. i wouldn't be surprised if they aren't interested in 13.5m in '19, 8.5m in '20 and 4m in '21 (or 4m in UEFA clauses).

I hope the mods re-open the Zaha thread so we can go back to reading Tierney news in the Tierney thread.

In typical Arsenal luck, Celtic's new LB Bolingoli was injured in their friendly today.

IIRC we did the same last season regarding a release clause = we paid more than we needed to so as to be able to pay less up front = Torreira?

EDIT - may have been for Kola or even both?

And I suspect you need to pay a lot more in those instances. The cost of capital in football must be high. There is so much uncertainty. You have no idea where your club will finish season to season, what will happen with players, what will happen with sponsorships/tv deals etc. So when you start asking teams to accept a larger share of value in later years, you will get penalised. They will put a massive discount rate on cash flow on later years and you will end up paying massive transfer fees. It looks smart to not have to pay up front but you could end up hampering yourself

I saw about this Celtic festival thing 10 days or so back and that Tierney wasn't listed as going in all the promo stuff despite literally every other Celtic player being involved, other injured players going along too, and Tierney being the one all the fans want to see.

I don't know why this guy says "I'm led to believe", like it's some sort of mystery. Celtic put out a detailled itinerary listing exactly who was going to be in attendance and what was going and Tierney was nowhere to be seen.

Just another reason to show that despite all the bluster from Celtic they know full well he's very likely going.

And Celtic spent on another CB again. I think they are well prepared that he will leave, just need to see who will bite.

The only thing people on Reddit say is that Ornstein follows the guy who tweeted this. 😆

"The" Celtic Park? Celtic will now concentrate on replacement fullback? Didn't they already pick up Boli? Apparently he was injured in the last game but it was just sickness during the game and not a football related injury and should be ready for their next game.

Anyways there is too much wrong with the tweet, Ornstein followed or not, for me to believe it.

Looks like it's true. Celtic ITKs are saying this as well

Felt confident for yonks that this will happen

Saw a short clip of Tierney training with Celtic today. The lads well stocky

Yep, he's a strong, stocky bloke. Got those old school fullback, Stuart Pearce-style, tree trunk legs. Should help him adjust to Premier League football.

From what I've read, his ability to get up and down non-stop is one of his best qualities.

The intensity of the Premier League will be a step up but there’s absolutely nothing to worry about with him physically. He’s quick, strong and aggressive.

Stylistically he looks similar to Chilwell but perhaps slightly more comfortable on the ball
