Leao is a good talent. Like a young Welbeck but with more goals in him. Keep an eye out.

Lille still have Ikone and Bamba, and they will reinvest the £100m+ on the next batch of up-and-coming talents in France. They'll be alright.

They’ve been experiencing financial difficulties. They looked to move Pépé last year for around £30m but he insisted on staying and developing further to his and the club’s benefit. At least they enjoyed a stellar season last year.

Lille seem like a decent club. When they've accepted bids from four clubs it sounds logical that they could've pushed for a higher price, but they didn't.

Yeah I think it's a lot as well, but four clubs having the same max limit seems unrealistic so they could've probably gotten more.

Yes, but that’s where where the player wants to go becomes a factor. Unless a club bid close to 100million (and that wasn’t likely for Pepe at least at this point in time) you’re not going to hold out for all that. 72 mill is a great price for him. I don’t give them too much credit for taking it if the difference would have been say 5-10 million, and the risk of a disgruntled, unhappy player.

Yeah. Bidding wars don’t happen in practice. At best maybe you can secure more favourable terms, clauses etc.

that's what i'm hoping happens with Saliba next season, that when the season is done people look at him as a player that's would be sold for twice as much if he was available. imagine if we signed Pepe for 30m last year and loaned him back to Lille for the season.

I may be mistaken, but Isn’t that similar to what Chelsea does, or used to do that got them in trouble ?

I feel it’s not a viable strategy going forward. The risk is waaaay too high at that price. The player has to be close to a sure thing, and Nicky P only blew up last season. The season prior he had scored 13 goals with 6 assists, and the one before that he had only 3 goals and 1 assist to his name.

Who signs a Ligue 1 player for 30-40million, and then loans him back to parent club for those numbers? And right now I’d argue Saliba is at 2016/2017 Pepe level.

who? apparently us and anyone else who was interested in saliba this summer. 30m for saliba and as you said he's at the 2016/17 pepe stage in his development. so pepe at his 2017/18 level would have been less of a gamble. anyway we need to take gambles to try and overhaul city ... winning the title has to be our ultimate goal and not just top 4.
