This is where the PL is at a disadvantage, in that we don't have B or C Teams in lower divisions to be able to blood staff and potential managers as with both Guardiola and Zidane.

EDIT - if we're talking about styles of football then if Arteta is a follower of Guardiola in the same way that Guardiola is a follower of Cruyff, then I'm prepared to give him a go after/following Emery, provided that the club actively supports him on and off the pitch.

I also think that it is significant that our individual errors have been the worst over both seasons under 2 different managers and 2 different styles - that's on the players, particularly when the same players are heavily involved in both seasons.

We have been spectacularly bad over the past month or so. Our away form and the manager’s ability to make the most out of the entire squad in these critical weeks has to be called into question.

Seems to me we've just collapsed as soon as we weren't the underdogs - sure we have some shit players in the squad but fundamentally we're better than the teams we've lost to. I suspect this is a dry run for how Emery and the team would react if we ever challenge for the title

I think we are just not that much better than the teams we've faced recently and being away meant we were never real favourites anyway. Leicester and Wolves are very decent sides in good form, we should have picked up a couple more points but I'd never be confident against in form 7-9th type teams away from home with this squad. The results were worse than they should have been though, we can't be going away from him and shipping 3 goals like that so often, its just not good enough.

It's not good enough, no. We tried all out attack against Wolves and got beat. We tried defending and playing on the counter against Leicester and got beat. We tried playing Mustafi and got beat, tried not playing Mustafi and got beat.

I don't think a "balanced" approach has done well for us either, which is basically just pack the midfield and watch our attack fail to make anything of our possession. I prefer the expansive, playing-out-the-back style we were using earlier in the season, but it's pretty obvious to me that the players don't have the legs or the will to execute it anymore. The squad is too thin. Liverpool had pretty much this exact problem, and only the transfer market was able to rectify it.

It's entirely fair to say that we would slip up in the odd game or two against Wolves or Leicester - shit happens - but we've now lost 4 out of the last 5 games against teams that are 12-13 points behind us at a point when we were actually on an upward trajectory and had top four in our hands. That's a bottle job rather than a lack of quality.

Emery probably should get another season but more due to a lack of truly exciting alternatives - if there has been any progress this season, it feels more like a tentative toe forward rather than a confident march

Exactly. So what we had a red card? It’s absolutely criminal to collapse in that fashion and concede 3 goals against a mid table team. The manager should at that point have switched tactics and showed that he had a plan for that eventuality. Let’s end the game 0-0, or at worst concede a single, excellently worked goal. But even before the red card we were second best, and that is the fact. Not good enough at all.

I think we were worse before the card, tbh. But there clearly was a plan for how to play with 10 men. The team adjusted immediately, not that it took much adjustment as we were most of they there already. They didn't succeed, but they had a plan.

Bit of both I think. Seems to me those teams are our Achilles heel and they all came along at once. Add the distraction of the Europa and the injury to Remsey and this is what we get. We absolutely need a couple of players who can drag the team along and show some leadership. There is far too little criticism of the senior members of the squad IMO.

Absolutely but I think a confident march forward takes more than a manager. The whole narrative of a new era behind the scenes fell apart as soon as it started with Egghead and Mislintat both fucking off.

I think I'm ok backing him for another season, in that:

1) he demonstrated a vision early in the season, and while the results weren't always great we did see a new brand of play
2) we have looked far better in our big games
3) we turned around deficits (down at half, behind to BATE/Rennes)

And if I think to next season, I think we could have a better season with Emery and his vision/new players vs having to find a new coach and hope our players match him. We have too many players to move - and hopefully bring in - to think it will work if we're left waiting for a new coach's direction/vision.
