i'd say he knows how to prepare against big teams. only big teams that outplayed us were city home/away and liverpool away, and they're light years ahead of everyone. he hasn't figured out how to be consistent in the epl yet, but neither did pep or klopp in their first seasons

I really think Emery will come into his own next season providing he's given sufficient funds to bring in the type of players he wants.

I don't feel there's much chance he'll be given what we'd think of as "sufficient funds" so I hope he can thrive on less.

He’d better have some contacts in Spain and elsewhere who can unearth the next Fabregas and Cazorla. We need some affordable quality, and he’ll need tow be resourceful in the absence of a DoF.

We've made some good signings and some bad ones. Torreira and Guendouzi are emblematic of the good.

I don't want to sign any half-baked wispy Suarezes or mistake factory Mustafis and Xhakas over the break. Putting the whole budget on one top defender would be a better bet.

Surely the bigger issue is that whatever the funds we have available this summer, we're not currently set up to procure the right players since Mislintat left? I worry about Raul and Unai have in store in terms of a transfer shortlist.

I really have no idea, but I have thought for a while that it's more about connections and trust than lists.

I assume every big club has thorough databases of all European players from the juniors up, with stats that narrow them down enough they can work the process through until it's time to make contact.

The thing about Mislintat is that he obviously inspired a few friendships and a sense of momentum and the capacity to influence things for his prospective signings. Monchi has a similar name, and his working history with Emery would have been a positive.

I just have no idea where we'd be at, except that I'm confident the Kroenkes won't be spending that much, I think they probably feel like they shot their shot by signing us Özil, Aubameyang and Lacazette. Just pray God we make the CL I guess.

Interesting thought. I guess for me at least, the profiles of the players we signed last summer seemed to be more value for money than in previous seasons, thereby extracting maximum return from a tanner budget. In seasons gone by, we've not been as efficient in the market and rightly or wrongly I've attributed that to Sven's influence (although a sample of one transfer window is little to go on).

At the end of the day, signing the right talent really only requires you to do the following

a clear game plan from the manager on what he's doing, where the gaps are, and what talent he wants
a team that can identify the right talent and approach it quickly
sufficient financial support

You do not necessarily need a DoF to achieve this. Emery, Mislintat and our chief scout just need to act quickly. As Burns says, these guys are overwhelmed with information on the players. They have access to performance metrics and videos on everyone above the age of 17. We just need the three elements above to work seamlessly

Xhaka and Mustafi weren't bad signings. They were highly rated before they came here, it's Wenger's dogshit coaching that made them this way

What you're saying makes total sense. But what I can't fathom therefore is why the last decade has produced such poor windows (forward planning aside). Even when we identified key targets and secured then, they've been a bit underwhelming with respect to how much we paid.

wenger was shit by that point, but we still got robbed. european clubs subscribe to the "when you see an ass (PL club), ride it." principle.

Everything was shit by that point if Mustafi was surrounded by better players and had the crowd on side and settled in London I'm sure hed be better than he is now.
