Our fullbacks seem ridiculously more effective under Emery than they were for years under Wenger.
I'd be interested in hearing people's views on this, if it's the case, why it's the case (and what we're sacrificing if anything).
I think it's to do with drilling patterns in training. Wenger always talked about players having the freedom to make their own choices in the final third and we saw the beautiful spontaneity that freedom produced with the Invincibles. We also saw the mess, to varying degrees, that followed with lesser players.
Emery, like most modern managers, it seems, works almost obsessively on player's understanding patterns and repeating them over and over. It's basic positional play that is a fundamental tenet of Guardiola's coaching, but it seems Wenger was almost ideologically opposed to it (I am to a degree).
So when Bellerin gets in on the overlap, he knows which areas will be attacked by team mates. Something like front post, back post and penalty spot, every single time, and he's repeated the situation a thousand times in training. It takes some of the difficulty away from the moment. And Bellerin needs that because he lacks the technical quality needed to focus mainly on decision making. Whereas someone like Monreal can worry a lot less about his touch and where the ball is, take in the options available and respond in the moment. Hence he and Sanchez used to wreak havoc down that left side under Wenger.
As a sidenote, a couple things mentioned above, I'd say Bellerin has always had very good ground passing with his instep, as in the pass to Ramsey for Aubameyang's second goal, it's anything with power or his laces he struggles with. I also think he's generally been a very good and very underrated defender in everything but his one-v-one defending, where he has a tendency to get caught flat-footed and square on some times. In the box he has always been switched on and aware, especially when crosses clear the centebacks and he needs to react quicker than the forward.
I also loved seeing his aggression yesterday. Bit left field, but I actually think he'll be Arsenal captain one day.
