How many 'great' managers are there in the Premier League Ricky? Guardiola obviously but he spends England's GDP on his squad. Can Emery compete with any of the others? Absolutely
I'd begrudgingly describe Pochetinno as a great manager. Better than just good. Perhaps Klopp too--although his inability to do anything other than "gegenpress" stops me going that far. Mourinho has been a great manager but probably isn't any more. And who knows who'll be managing Chelsea next season, but you can't rule out them getting a top manager in like they did previously with Conte.
It just feels to me like a continuation of what we've been doing, only doing it a bit better. Nothing radically different or innovative.
Arteta would have been a very bold and brave appointment and he would have brought with him a very different type of football to the type we've seen for the last few years (at least it's very likely that would have been his approach). Perhaps he would have struggled to manage a squad and also get 20 players to buy into his methods and respect his authority, but I think the risk was worth it considering the esteem in which he is held by everyone that has worked with him.
It would have been very exciting to see what he could have done, and even more exciting because the club--for so long safe and resistant to change--had the balls to do it.
