Contrary to the 4-2-3-1 thing I've heard on here, Veland (Spanish football fanatic, literally watched every La Liga game this season) says that Emery is known for playing 4-4-2.

I'll say it, sure. He's a great manager. He's a full tier better than Allegri who everybody seemed to want. He's a better option than Ancelotti and Enrique for sure. There are others we could have gone with but among the known quantities he's one of the very best.

I don't expect us to challenge City or United regardless of who comes in, and Liverpool needed several years with Klopp to get to where they are right now. Our goal next season has to be the top four (and after that to maintain a top four finish). It's going to take time to unfuck the last two years of havoc that Wenger wreaked before he left, but I think Emery can get us to play football again.

I am quietly optimistic about this. If he manages to assert his authority and get the players to work for him, he should be able to improve our results quite a bit.

I worry, however, that if he cannot assert his authority the results will be disastrous.

Positives:

He is young
He is experienced (and knows what it is like to win trophies)
Decent human being
Passionate
Extremely dedicated and sounds like he understands football very well

Negatives:

His methods sound like they only really work if he commands respect
Does not seem to have a particularly exciting / revolutionary philosophy
Sounds like we will adapt our play to our opponents rather than focus on developing our own, which might be good or bad but represents a massive change post-Wenger

All in all Arsenal might be the best fit for him in terms of the clubs he has coached: Valencia were in crisis, Sevilla sell their best players every year, and PSG are a bizarre club like no other.

Remember the article that covered the crisis meeting the players had in which some were crying, etc., and some of the alleged comments suggested that they were crying out for clearer instruction from the management team? If true, you'd have to think that Emery's detailed approach will be a breath of fresh air and that the team will embrace it.

i'll give you allegri. i think he was the number 1 choice but we couldn't get it done

Emery's a good shout; a search across historical posts on the forum will probably find plenty that were supportive of him prior to his time at PSG. It's easy to forget that football is full of human beings. A Salah at Chelsea under Mourinho is shit, a Salah at Liverpool under Klopp is one of the top 5 attackers in the world. The same sort of things applies to managers, Emery did very well at Sevilla and Valencia but arguably underperformed at PSG. Apply some context to the situation and it's easy to see that any manager would find it difficult to control the amount of player power that exists in the French capital at current, especially one that tries to apply structure to a bunch of blokes that all want to be heroes.

Would've been happy with Allegri but let's be honest, his teams have been hosed plenty in big European matches.

Pellegrini has a track record of having worked wonders with a limited budget at Villarreal where they reached the CL semis.

Pellegrini has gone to West Ham, we would have been too late to the party. Emery was also considered by West Ham though, but was apparently their 5th choice and didnt quite stand a chance with their board there.

First, contextually, we were unlikely to find a manager who the fans would like universally. There isn’t a consensus choice like Guardiola, and even he gets a lot of fans’ backs up.

That said, Emery himself is an excellent choice. He has done well in La Liga, and especially well in the Europa League, where winning a hat trick of cups was most impressive. Consider our one foray. He’s tactically flexible, and incredibly meticulous in his planning. He will also appeal to this club because he is able to develop and integrate young players, even at super clubs, such as Kimpembe at PSG.

Although he is rightly criticized for the 6-1 defeat to Barca, he did also engineer the 4-0 first leg, which we never could have imagined against a top European club in recent years. I remember watching PSG absolutely suffocate Barca in that performance. He also had a much better win percentage than predecessors Ancelotti and Blanc, hitting about 15% more points per game in his tenure (this supports the point that the Monaco team he lost the league to completely beasted it).

So I am confident that he can come in and give us an improvement over the previous regime.

If Arteta is serious about his 120% philosophy, he should call West Ham and Everton. These are two well-resourced clubs with passionate followings. Let’s see what he can do there! Then we can give him a call

Never forget that Zidane and Guardiola had the chance to blossom in the risk free zone that is Castilla and Barca B. This would be like your boss at a company saying “here’s an R&D budget, try whatever you want, there’s very little downside, and any cool discoveries will be incorporated in our top selling product”. No other teams globally provide the platform these guys have had to experiment and grow as coaches. Arteta has none of this. He would be doing this experimentation and self discovery in our Premier League and cup games. The stakes are too high. It’s not apples for apples comparing him to the fresh faces coming through the Spanish League.

Even Everton and West Ham wouldn't be so daft as to appoint a bloke with fuck all managerial experience. Marco Silva and Pellegrini heading to those clubs respectively.

We don’t know what happened w/Art. Wanted too much $$, more control on transfers, Board too conservative?
My one and only choice was Bardim.
Hope that Emery has started English lessons.

Just woke up to this. So disappointed. Feels like the kind of guy who won’t be able to motivate players or pull them out of a funk (which is what the team is in given the last 2 seasons and the constant fan pressure). I suspect we will continue to tread water for another year or two. Seems like a safe caretaker appointment for a couple of years in which time Mislintat and Sanllehi can repair the squad and bring a top manager in. Having said that, hope none of this is true and I am wrong when Emery gets us to finish fourth and / or win the EL. Good luck to the new gaffer!

For those who have watched his recent teams (Sevilla / PSG), what’s his style? Counterattacking with a compact low block, high press, death by possession? How are his teams defensively?
