Unai Emery vision impresses as Spaniard ‘wins race for Arsenal job’

Unai Emery is expected to be confirmed as the new Arsenal manager later this week after blowing the Gunners hierarchy away with his vision for the club.

The former PSG coach has emerged as the ‘unanimous choice’ for the Arsenal board to succeed Arsene Wenger after an extensive interview process over the past few days.

Former midfielder Mikel Arteta was the frontrunner to replace Wenger for the past few weeks, but the Spaniard is expected to stay as Manchester City assistant manager. Thierry Henry has also been interviewed for the job.

Emery left Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after winning one Ligue 1 title and four domestic cups during his two seasons in charge – but his likely appointment will still come as a surprise given he only emerged as a “last-gasp contender” over the weekend after the Gunners were alerted to the Spaniard’s availability.

Such a very Arsenal signing - surplus to requirements at a big money club so we pick him up because he became available, not because we proactively decided months ago that he was the man.

Twice as good is plain wrong. That Monaco side was absolutely incredible. This was before PSG had Neymar remember.

As for the rumours that he couldn't control the dressing room I agree that is a concern but again PSG is in a unique situation because of Neymar.

I'm so relieved we've gotten a proper manager with a bit of experience in. A proper winner too.

Seems like the Arteta stuff was either just hype or a smokescreen. It was never very Arsenally to have it play out over the papers for the last couple of weeks so its not that surprising that they didn't want Arteta after all.

The common defence I'm seeing of Emery seems to be that he couldn't get control of the dressing room at PSG. To the extent that he played 4-3-3 instead of his preferred 4-2-3-1 because the players decided that was what was happening.

That's an indictment of his management ability not a defence of it.

That Monaco side amassed 95 points scored over 100 goals in the league and got to the CL semis, no shame in losing the title to a team like that. And the second story is some hearsay stuff that's made up regularly about anything related to PSG like Neymar forcing team mates to do his bidding etc, and I'm pretty sure nobody here used that defence for Emery.

Exactly its still his choice. His neck shouldn't be on the line anyway. Expecting instant success with limited resources is silly. If Emery fails then we need recognise it and replace him, thats what I'll be judging Gaizidis on.

Apparently Emery will bring in his own staff, including physio. Would make the culllings a little more understandable if we knew about this already.

Only a two year deal apparently.

You can’t blame him if a reasonable choice doesn’t work out, shit happens. But Arteta was a Sanogo level risk and if that doesn’t work people, even the ones who backed the gamble, would have been all over the club if it didn’t work.

You can’t blame him if a reasonable choice doesn’t work out, shit happens. But Arteta was a Sanogo level risk and if that doesn’t work people, even the ones who backed the gamble, would have been all over the club if it didn’t work.

But as we can see from the reactions on here and social media this isn't the most popular appointment either.

I assumed it would only be a short--term appointment; if true, it proved he wasn't the preferred candidate (by a long stretch) and would make him a dead man walking before he even starts work. Hopefully, the board won't be as slow to react if it all goes tits up.

How on earth is Arteta a safe option?

If Emery fails yes Gazidis will share some responsibility but Emery's an experienced coach and seen as a safe option so most of it will fall on Emery. If Arteta fails it will mostly fall on Gazidis because he would be the one who gave a completely inexperienced coach a chance and it didn't work out.

If Emery fails the next person out of the door should be Gazidis. Guy has been at the club for 10 years and only in the last year or so has got the back room changes in place so Wenger could leave. And when he leaves the best he come out with is Emery? Dull, pragmatic and completely uninspiring. In his time at Sevilla did not break into the Top 4 even once, he had one of the best talent scouts working there as well supplying him with very good players. All good talking about the Europa cup wins but we would have won it had we not faced a proper team like Atletico, CL is on a different level. And this season we were fucking shit, that is the level of the Europa Cup. In his time for PSG we finished above them in the group stages and they got humiliated two seasons in a row at the Quarters.

Like I said I hope I'm wrong and will be the first to admit it.

Arteta can still go to Everton where he gave his best years and is a legend.
e: That could serve as his apprenticeship/audition and we could, then, take him if he proves he is better than Emery.

For the most part it's just a gut reaction either for or against the appointment, nothing that I've read here suggests any great insight or knowledge of him as a manager.

If like me you were hoping for something completely fresh and risky Emery seems like a wet facecloth.

Jones has given good insight actually.

For me fresh and risky was Allegri but I accept I didn't expect Emery.
