Now that we are firmly into the Emery era though, I’m concerned we might be getting carried away. Both because many of us feel managerial change has been long due, but also because of the sheer number of signings and activity over the course of a single window.

The competition is real. City and Pep will be looking to repeat. Chelsea will come out strong if they don’t lose any key player, United and Mourinho will be boring as usual, but harder to beat and Liverpool will be looking to take the next step and make some progress, same as Spurs.

Getting back into top 4 on first try is probably going to be a pretty tough ask.

I don't think expectations are that high to be fair, how can they be after the last couple of years. I think seeing some real change on the pitch is all I really expect. I want to see I style of player that I can actually identify, game after game. I want to see us being bold going forward, and less stupid at the back. Not right away maybe, but hopefully not too many months into the season either.

Beyond that, I don't expect much in terms of actual results, but if the first comes to pass then the results are bound to follow.

Speaking just for myself, I'm not expecting it to be easy. I've been saying for a while that this squad is better than they've shown and that a better manager could get more out of them. However, totally agree regarding the level of competition we're up against.

Unai has two years to get us back into the CL, which is totally feasible. If he achieves that, happy days. Then we can start thinking about loftier ambitions. But the great thing is, if things don't work out, we're now set up as a club to make the necessary changes and that is the oxygen we've been crying out for.

Honestly tbink we shouldn't have to many issues getting into the top 4 if Emery is able to get the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. We have arguably the best striker in the league, one of the most creative players and have just signed players that should in theory go some way to fixing problem areas in the team.

Our problem for a long time has been a lack of a proper identity in the way we play, often compromising on our attacking strengths in an attempt to be more solid at the back and ending up in situations where we don't look comfortable in either direction. If Emery is able to inject some urgency and proper drills into these players and get them to commit to a certain style of play then I'm very comfident top 4 should not be an issue.

The title may possibly be beyond us with the squad that Guardiola has assembled but I don't for one second b3lieve that Spurs, Liverpool and United have better squads than us.

Ah but those teams- they already have an identity. It took Pool what 3 years before they started seeing the fruits of Kloppism. Same with Mou and Poch.

It’s not entirely about the composition of the squad but how best to get them playing as a unit to their strengths. That’s what takes a bit of time for a good coach to figure out.

Even with us having Ozil and Aubameyang I would be extremely impressed if we are able to get back in there this upcoming season. Fingers crossed

I partly agree, Flobs. My only contention is that while I don't think we are "assured" of a Top 4 place this season, I would be disappointed if we didn't at least compete strongly for it and realistically look like knocking 2 of Sprs, Chelsea or Y**ted out of the top 4. If we ended up 5th at the end of the season, that's ok as long as we show an ability to compete with the big teams rather than the limp performance of the last 2 seasons.

There are 5 other clubs who wouldn't tolerate finishing outside the top four either, ultimately something's got the give. As long as there are proactive changes being made by the club, there's really not much more that we can ask for.

I think fans are pretty good generally at assessing performance on these things without having a definitive end result in mind. That being said, I think if you finish outside the top 4 it's would be very difficult to describe it as a success and it would add all the more pressure on the following season to show some tangible results in terms of progress.

Stable league position and a sense of forward progress and optimism would count as success for me.

Top four would definitely count as success.

I'll be a bit gutted if we don't get both, but transitioning from Wenger will not be trivial.
