What is success? Under Wenger we were not happy with 4th, but before people start jumping up and down with that stick, the last two season we finished outside the top 4.

For me our ultimate goal has to be getting back to a league contending side. That is going to take a few seasons though, in order to do that we have to show improvement under Unai. Seriously challenging for top 4 is the minimum, if we miss out, it should be by a handful of points.

Also as a side point, I want to see some of our youth players, start to make real strides in improving. For the last few years, almost no one has come through. I want to see some of young players make the grade under Unai.

I think if you look at inputs that seem to correlate with eventual success in modern football, you would say that success for this season would be to find an identity - something that Wenger's teams over the last 5-6 years didn't have. The other metric (short of league position / points) would be defensive strength - most Arsenal teams since Wenger started have posted good offensive numbers, so one of the defining things will be how good Emery can make this team defensively. If he can achieve an identity for the team in terms of style and improve us defensively (which I highly doubt, going by track record, but am hopeful of anyway), that would count as progress to me even if we don't meet the more objective metric of finishing in the top 4 (as long as it is not by a huge margin).

An identity would be great. A team that attacks with real pace and purpose, instead of this slow sideways passing that seemed to consume us over the last few years, would be ideal.

In terms of us improving defensively, I can’t see it. Slightly yes, but I can’t see us becoming much better as Unai has never shown that at the clubs he has been at.

I do expect us to be far slicker on the counter attack, and hopefully a much better pressing team.

If we concede goals because of our high risk, high press system then I'm fine with that. Just want us to cut down the sheer number of goals conceded that come down to pure stupidity and clumsiness.

We need a world class centre back, look how Liverpool have done since they bought VVD. Klopp's no connoisseur of the art of defending in the traditional sense - but they improved a lot (to my eye at least, I haven't seen any stats) since signing him.

We have no one of that calibre.

They have - but VVD has only been around for 3-4 months and he's a good defender but hardly world class. In fact, you could argue that losing Countinho forced their midfield to become more compact instead.

Anyway, the point isn't the number of goals - rather the focus should be about being able to tighten up at the back during key moments in games or withstanding pressure when the opposition are in flow so that we go home with all 3 points. That's when conceding a goal is unacceptable. However, if occasionally we get hit on the sucker punch by, say West Ham, when we're trying to win the game rather than sitting on a draw then it's annoying but I can live with it.
