i think tying up the new manager quickly was key.. there is only a few weeks before the WC starts, and getting a "name" like Emery might actually aid us in trying to get a couple players on the quick side (if we can). Im thinking he already has a few players in his mind who he would like to bring in

I think it all depends on what happens during the summer transfer window. We have several massive holes in the team, that needs to be addressed. If Emery can do something about that, then I think next season could be good. Otherwise it'll just be the same slow, dull and painful football as last season.

I love the way Gazidis said that the club has created the structure with himself, Mislintat and Sanllehi to support the manager. He came to the fore at the right time and seems like he is now setting the stage to go back into the background once more, which is the right thing to do. Emery should now be the face of the club.

Even if Emery doesn't work out, I think we're heading in the right direction. People are coming in with clear roles; we're now taking our seat at the table of modern day football.

I agree. I wasn't overly excited by him when it was first announced but what does excite me is the new structure that we have in place with a clear division of responsibility. Like shady says, it feels like we're actually moving forward (even if it's slowly) as a club for the first time since Fabregas left really.

Also - I think part of the reason is that no one really had Emery down as a target since it was assumed he'd go back to Spain but the more you think about it, it does seem like he would be the one of the best picks out of those managers that are currently available.

I was actually completely the opposite. Pretty excited when I'd found out it would be him and not Arteta given the former's triumphs with Seville in the EL etc and the latter's complete lack of experience. However since then it's been shown thay he'd conceded over 50 goals almost every season he's been a manager and going without an away win in his whole last season at Seville has put a bit of a downee on things for me.

Now I'm cautiously optimistic again.

Sven , Raul, Emery, and Gazidis all seem to have distinctly different roles, no? Big difference to Wenger's influence on the club.

Sven , Raul, Emery, and Gazidis all seem to have distinctly different roles, no? Big difference to Wenger's influence on the club.

That doesn't really answer the question - they "all seem to have distinctly different roles" is not the same as understanding what their exact responsibilities are or knowing what level of autonomy they have in their area, or even how clearly defined the area might be.

Well, you'll never know what their exact responsibilities are given that it's rightly behind close doors. However, up until a couple of years ago it was pretty much Wenger and Gazidis calling all the shots, now that circle has expanded and while someone (I suspect Gazidis for most things) has the final veto, the fact that there are more people involved and have their voices heard is a good thing.

He knows what attractive football looks like having managed PSG

He’ll have a point to prove after leaving PSG

I'm more in Mirth's camp but tempered with the concern over his defensive stats.

Is anyone able to shed a bit more light on the defensive strengths and weaknesses of his team's? After years of Wenger ineptitude in this area, I really would prefer us to be less of a joke at the back.
