Hadn't thought of Elneny but yeah he's already really reliable and hard working, Emery could add a few other qualities.

Can definitely see Elneny make big strides under Emery, he's well rounded as a player but has made little progress under Wenger. Someone with his stamina and willingness to move would learn lots under a coach who shows him how to position himself in defence or attack

Part of my worry is at Valencia & PSG there was talk he lost control of the dressing room. At PSG more understandable as players have a direct line to the owner and that never helps. Valencia more worrisome but it was his first major job. I wouldn't say we have any controversial characters in the dressing room so hopefully that won't be too much of a concern

What will benefit those players is more direct and clear instructions. Wenger put too much faith in his players finding their own solutions, it was a way of helping them develop. These days with teams being so prepared it was an approach which I think let him down. Also unlike players of the past I think the newer generation prefer to more prepared and told what to do. With Bellerin there was rumours for years that he wasn't getting enough 1 to 1 defensive training, things like that will help. Players need to be more prepared and organised and it seems like that is one of Emery's strengths.

I think that was definitely one of Wenger's biggest weaknesses, positioning mainly in defence was so poor. Midfielders usually had no idea where they should be, for someone like Xhaka who isn't the most mobile it was critical he position himself well and he used to drift all over the place.

Sounds like an angry old man rant. It's not like players were training with more intensity in the past.

It's more likely that the margins are so small now that players can't afford to rely on making independent decisions and waste half a season arriving at solutions themselves. Wenger could afford to take that approach when 80 points a season could conceivably net you a title but it's a lot harder when Man City are playing near perfect games.

Valencia much more so than us have been a pretty tumultuous bunch since as long as I've known them. Bigger profile back then too when Emery took over it wasn't that long ago they had won a league and UEFA Cup double but still - having followed La Liga and Valencia in particular pretty closely around that time I can't recall Emery losing the dressing room at all, difficult to do given the new makeup of the squad after every summer.

Maybe whoever thinks Emery did was thinking of Koeman who managed to almost relegate them after sending their two most senior players in Albelda and Canizares to the reserves shortly after his arrival. The fat fuck was the last full time manager before Emery came so that's a possibility, although having seen some of the tweets mentioning this it seems a lot more like someone spinning a narrative to fit the PSG dressing room storyline.

I think there was a big story around Emery losing the Valencia dressing room, most notably Manuel Fernandes, Dominguez, Miguel Britos, David Navarro. People would apparently show up late for training, wouldn't be disciplined for the most extreme actions (violence, assault, etc.) and so on. Who knows how true these stories are, but they have been around.

Navarro was a nutter, extremely dirty and famously broke Burdisso's nose with a punch during their CL tie with Inter but to be fair to him he was a different man in his second spell at Valencia, he was even made captain in the end. Sounds like gossip based in his reputation but then again if you have a source I'd appreciate it.

Completely agree with this. As much as I love them it always bugs me when you see the old invincibles go on about how much more character they had. Yet there are any number of things you could highlight to show they had the exact same weaknesses.

The reality in my opinion is that since then you've had a new breed of coaches in the PL who've been much more meticulous in their prep.
