The importance of his role is more the reason we need to upgrade. He is a shadow of the player he was. He has a decent game and we look much better. If we have a top creative player we will look like a different team going forward.

Fed up of the Ozil soap opera. I've been fed up of it for three years.

Sell in January and buy a modern replacement.

I’m not holding my breath for an Ozil sale. If we sell Ozil now, I suspect we will end up funding him at least £8m over the remainder of his contact. One way to offset this would be to do a loan for someone like Rabiot this season. Rabiot was a free signing, so we would likely just have to pay his wages. Overall we would spend about the same amount of money this year as we would with Ozil around (between Rabiot’s wages and Ozil’s payoff) and get at least Ozil’s output without all the headaches

Arsenal and United are throwing away money at an incredible rate. And we threw Luiz into the mix this summer as well because we weren’t wasteful enough already

Jake polden knows about as much about the wages at Arsenal as we do.

We have some wastage and that's normal but I can't get behind the idea that wages are being 'wasted' on starting players.

I find the (in)consistency in the reporting if the wages more interesting. They are being reported in £10k round figures (other than Sokratis and Torreira with £5k and £2k round figure respectively) but somehow wages for Laca, Luiz and Ceballos are reported to the nearest £1.

IIRC there were reports he was on a high wage in excess of 100k because he was signed as a free agent.

Either way, I believe we still have the fourth highest wage bill in the league, such is only sustainable for so long whilst we're with CL football given we'll also be overpaying in the transfer market to bridge the gap to the CL.

We shifted a ton of guys who one could assume were some of our bigger earners in the summer and we signed maybe pepe on a decent long term contract.

I think it's safe to say that we took a meat cleaver to the wage bill and we're okay wage wise for now.

Precisely. That’s why I say we are throwing away money. Imagine you had a start up and your first 22 employees were a bunch of ill-fitting guys. You had two guys who could be CFO and not enough experienced developers. This is the crap we are doing. There is no theory at work.

Agree with the above, the wage bill is big but would not be such a big issue if we hadn't invested so much of those funds in players that clearly aren't worth that investment.

Not much he can do when Laca and Nelson are as wasteful as they are. Thought he was decent today, and almost all our counters involved him at some level.

Not 350K good though.

I thought he was very good for an hour but ran out of steam. Substitution sould have happened earlier but it seems the injury on Chambers made Arteta hesitate.
