Gunnerblog claims he heard that Ozil didn’t turn up to training yesterday after finding out he wasn’t going to start.

Could be rubbish, people love to stir shit up, but Emery doesn’t exactly sound like he’s pleased.

If nothing else then today's result (and more importantly the performance), showed once and for all that no one is bigger than the team or club.

IMO just as we cannot afford to carry the likes of Wilshere or Rambo, the same also applies to Ozil perhaps even more so in terms of his wages.

Emery could have replied like that because he doesn't understand why after a performance like that journalists ask questions about a player who was not in the squad. And this is a recurring injury problem for Ozil. So we really don't know.

I’m not much one for Reddit but i noticed Ian Wright did an ask me anything session on there, and I thought the following comment was very interesting in light of the Ozil issue. He mentioned Bergkamp in an answer and was asked if there was anyone out there who could do for us what Bergkamp did.

The thing with Dennis was that he would perform when the team was playing well but more importantly he was able to drag us back up if we were playing crap. That’s the difference with a world class player – I remember being in training and matches and wanting to impress Dennis. You almost didn’t want to let him down, he was that good. So in total honesty, in the current team there isn’t anyone that can do that. In the wider market…yes…but can we afford them? I don’t know and I don’t think so.

For me, for the talent Ozil has, he should be much closer to Wright's description of Bergkamp than what we're getting from him just now. I don't think he's anywhere near capable of having that sort of impact, but a supreme talent like Ozil should be inspiring that sort of reaction of others wanting to contribute their best, as opposed to being left out against Bournemouth because the manager doesn't think he could hack it when it gets tough.
I suspect Aubameyang is likely to have some of that inspirational quality Wright is talking about. He seems to have that character, everyone seems to love him and it's clear he can make a difference or score even on an off day. I wouldn't be comfortable saying the same for Ozil. I want our top class players to raise the level of the team, not just on matchday but in general.

Good post. I agree, we can really only bank on Laca, Auba and Ramsey to be decisive for us regularly. That must change with two new wide additions.

I think that's a fair comment. I've always seen Ozil as a multiplier - if the rest of the team are putting in a 7/10 performance, then Ozil will deliver a 9/10 game. That's pretty much how his career at Real Madrid went.

It’s obvious really that Ozil has got to go, just like it was obvious that Wenger had to go.

The coach values hard work, discipline and a positive mental attitude to raw, flaky talent. Besides Ozil’s perpetual “back spasm” reaction to being criticized or dropped is as prima donna as they come. I think we will be rid of him if we can find someone who is willing to shell out in January for a play maker (Come on Mou, you can do it!). If not this drama will drag on till the summer window, and I imagine will test Emery’s man management skills.

On the other hand, Ramsey has been a proper professional despite having one foot out the door. Kudos to him for that.

I'm not going to go as far as questioning Ozil's professionalism, but it can't sit well within the squad when they see Ozil dropped for games because he can't be relied upon.
