The next man in charge must be brave enough to make sure Arsenal’s affinity for the beautiful game isn’t merely a phase looked upon with smug derision.
For all the talk of what is owed Wenger — respect, a dignified sendoff and so forth — what Arsenal owe their greatest manager more is to preserve the values he leaves behind.
IMO a valid point both in terms of legacy and practicality.
As much as I've been a staunch critic of AW for much of the last decade or so,
I actually agree with most of his core values in regards to style of play etc.
I even consider his strategy each season to seek to maintain a points tally in the mid-70s is brilliant in it's simplicity and effectiveness.
Much of my criticism is more in regards to his methodology and refusal to adapt those objectives,
and the seeming lack of any genuine KPIs as a means of ensuring that the objectives remained valid or realistic.
In many way I view this decision re his replacement akin to the opportunities to improve upon a fundamentally sound basis, as seen at Barca with their adherence to the Cruyff ideology, and even the succession seen at MC with Pellegrini laying the ground work for the club and players to transition from Mancini to Guardiola in terms of style.
Bottom line we DON'T need to tear it all down to rebuild from scratch.
We DO need to recognise what we want to retain in terms of identity and values, and then to build upon the parts of the extant framework that supports those values / identity.
To NOT do so open us up to the MU scenario akin to simply throwing it at the wall until something either sticks or hits the fan.
