If you got 500k for Cech you'd be doing well. Not saying he's bad, but really why would anyone pay money for him? He's old and isn't going to appreciate in value. His worth now surely must be as back up and for his experience in the dressing room and on the training ground.

Wenger's had countless opportunities to depart leaving our cash reserves intact and his successor able to purchase a striker of Aubameyang's ilk. Maybe not this summer given the inflated market, but certainly every summer for the past five years.

If he'd walked earlier we might be the ones watching Salah pick up Player of the Year. Instead he chose to stay and as you've just been cogently arguing yourself, will leave us with significantly depleted funds and a threadbare squad.

Yeah, I don't think our transfer strategy will suddenly change. It probably only reinforces the idea that Arsene alone wasn't responsible for sitting on money. He spent money over the last 2 years, dipping into the reserves he enabled us to build and failed. He has been asked to leave for that.

The new manager has his task cut out. Which is why it's imperative we get a manager who has previously shown the ability to build a competitive side on a relatively smaller budget. Our position on the table may not be completely suggestive of our competitiveness given our poor away record.

We have more points at home than any other team in the League other than City. We have scored a record number of goals at home this season in all competitions, a tally only bettered once in the 1930s. We have a forward line which could be great in theory and even with our transfer budget the right man can get give us a major lift.

Rather than looking at names what are the criteria we want?

Do we think the new structure is sound enough to compensate for a manager who has little experience in managing at top flight or club level?

Do we need someone who can develop players with an eye to our Reserves and Youth teams doing so well atm?

With the restricted transfer budget and inflated wages, can we afford to tear it all down or doe we need to try to maximise the potential of what we have on hand until we can secure new improved commercial revenues etc?

Do we need someone to come in and hit the ground running re both PL and truncated pre-season?

Decide the priorities and then who ticks the most boxes.

We made a net profit last summer, 50m+ is a huge increase.

Anyway, I don’t really get the argument that a new manager has a huge rebuilding job to do and needs to spend 200m plus. If that were the case we could sign Joe Nobody and get back into the top 4 and eventually challenge. The idea is to get someone who can do it on the budget above, someone who can integrate youth, someone who can make the most of hidden gems out there as well as the guys already in the squad.

Disagree. We're going into a period where established stars will be restless, the team will be less settled, and the vultures will be circling. The new manager needs cash in hand to address our deficits, particularly the terrible state of our defence.

It's taken Liverpool, united and city quite a few managerial flops to get to the managers they have currently.

Well do well to find a manager on the first try that can out preform guys like klopp pep, Jose and probably allergri at Chelsea.

And he will. £50m net spend is in line with what everyone bar the two Manchester clubs spend. Chelsea average about 30m a year over the last 3 years. Tottenham and Liverpool can't be far off. You're mental if you think we can compete with the other two financially. Even if we spent beyond our means one summer, we'd pay for it the next two and there's no guarantee it would pay off, United have spent nearly half a billion over the last few years and still look shit. And then we'll be really fucked because unlike United and City, we can't just keep buying until we get it right.

We need to think longer term. We have a fairly large wage budget, if we manage that better we'll have enough to keep the stars happy. See Mesut. With the FFP contraints though it's all the more important to be able to compete with less established names and kids, because we can't have a squad full of guys on 200k a week. It's vital to get someone who can work within those constraints. We're not talking about poverty though, our budget is as big as anyone bar the financially doped clubs.

Nope, we've had more before. I think the season we brought Mustafi & Xhaka in? We spent a lot then. We were also reputed to have more when our only spend was Cech.

If the 50m transfer budget is true, which I doubt, then it makes sense if we're going for the likes of Arteta and Vieira who would happily take the job even under those conditions.

A bankroll for our first new manager in twenty-two years is totally doable, and would make sense given our league position and the state of the squad. We're not debt-loaded like some other clubs and we're also very far from being maxed out on straightforward operating income gains as we sit outside the Champions League places.

Note this is not the same as advocating an ongoing program of spending so much the club collapses.
