I read a really interesting article about how Nike come up with new designs for teams. Granted that's Nike but the Nigerian FA were open to new ideas so the designers could play around a bit more. They try to create a story or capture the general mood of the country or footy or incorporate some history.
Some countries don't want their kits played with at all. Countries with large histories in footy especially. For example for Brazil it HAS to be the same yellow...period. England are similar. Argentina's (Addidas) kit looks exactly the same as before.
With France it's about subtle style so you can clearly see class in both their home and away kits.
Croatia have bigger squares but not sure if it's actually better.
The Aussie home kit is poor for me. The away is nice though.
