But a fundamental principle of the contemporary craft of reporting on sexual assault is corroboration: the painstaking task of tracking down friends and neighbors a traumatized victim may have confided in soon after the assault, to see if their accounts align with the victim’s story and to give it more — or less — weight.
Seriously, fuck the NYT. In one sentence they manage to condemn survivors as liars, accuse reporters that believe them of laziness, and make sweeping claims over what journalism is, and what methodologies count as journalism, but only in the context of sexual assault, because survivors are not inherently trusted like their usual "sources." Disgusting organization.
