Yeah, but Messi is the best player of his generation plying his trade at a modern superclub full of world class players, and they've all been geared towards getting the most out of him. Salah is playing with bloody Jordan Henderson.
Messi has carried Barcelona this season as hard as Salah has carried his team. Every single attacking move goes through him and unlike Salah he actually has to start most of them from midfield. Not to take anything away from Salah but since you asked and I've seen a fair chunk of both players this season that's my two cents for what it's worth, although I understand that when someone does it for years on end consistently it starts to feel less impressive.
If it makes you feel better I think Messi should have won the ballon d'or every single year since he broke through, aside from maybe one or two seasons where Pirlo or Ibrahimovic had legitimate claims. It's not that you've come to expect even more from him because he's so outrageousy good, at least not for me. It's just that doing what he's doing, but for a second-rate shithouse club like Liverpool instead of the biggest institution in modern football, is a little more impressive in my eyes. Some of the morons Salah plays with can't spot runs, have to face the right way in order to do anything meaningful with the ball, and couldn't trap a bag of cement if someone held a gun to their head.
