If (when) we don't land him, I just don't want Mbappe going to a premier league rival. Watched a 10 minute highlight video this morning. It was intoxicating. The guy has incredible levels of talent. The player who most impressed me as a teenager was Cristiano, and he was nowhere near as effective as an 18 year old. He's got that combination of speed and style that very few do, and he's already a finisher.

I can understand the price. He's worth more than Pogba for sure

At 18, yeah. He just had an ease with which he would dominate much more experienced defenders. He also looked more athletic and up to it. Credit to Messi for overcoming his diminutive stature through hard work and hormones to become a legend.

But if I look in recent years, only Neymar looks this good at the same age.

I'm not so worried about trying to fix the prices. The problem is that the money flowing into football has to go somewhere. It either goes into shareholders/owners hands, or to players and agents. The fans will always be fleeced as long as 50,000 diehards are willing to buy season tickets.

I thought long and hard about this question this morning. I struggle to find an appropriate solution for the sick madness that is modern football

Easily Mbappe. We've seen for many many years what "value" signings have brought - waste of space by and large. And the toughest thing to find is an elite striker.

Kop boy does have a point in this instance though. Ronaldo at 18 looked like a pacier Quaresma, he became the player he is because of his obsessive competitiveness and physical attributes both which didn't bear fruit until he was a bit older. Messi at 18 was already earmarked to become the best ever.

Have to agree. I remember the first time I saw Messi, came on as a sub, I'd not heard much about him but his class was so obvious and the traits he displayed on that outing are what his game are about even today. Ronaldo on the other hand just looked like a show pony. It's his immense drive for goals that sets him apart and that only started to appear in his game later on. Even then it used to just look like he was getting lucky initially with the ball always landing at his feet, took a while for me to appreciate it as a world class quality.

First time I saw Ronaldo, he was playing against supposedly the best right back in England at the time, and he made an idiot of him over and over throughout the game. It's possibly that game that cost us a chance at signing Ronaldo because the United players begged Sir Alex to sign him after that. Ronaldo had recently visited Arsenal to explore moving to us. After that game, it was over. Sir Alex took out the checkbook.

I don't really have a first memory of Messi. He was just sort of there.

Yep. When Messi broke through, he just made football looked so easy. Ronaldo was just a showboater who needed a lot of guidance to be effective.

First memory of Messi (as a 17 year old actually) was vs Albacete in 04/05, him being subbed on after something like 86 minutes for Eto'o. Remember that Pires lob goal vs Villa? He scored a copy of it after a Ronaldinho assist a minute after coming on only for it to be wrongly disallowed. He then scored the same fucking goal again two minutes later
