Was supposed to have been at Wolf Alice in Hammersmith last night, the storm had other ideas. I'll take it as long as Arsenal don't let me down later today.

A guy on Twitter runs #5albums.. polls every couple of weeks. The current cycle is 1998, so obviously it's a West Country 1-2 featuring Massive Attack & PJ Harvey (and possibly even a three with Portishead's live album).

The other spots are up for grabs though, so I've finally got around to Sonic Youth's A Thousand Leaves which - a couple of listens in - I'm really enjoying, love the laidback vibe. It might be a bit too long to make the top 5 though, there were some big hitters around in 1998!

A bit of a weak year for me 1998. Elliott Smith takes the win with his 4th best album in my opinion.

That Lauryn Hill album is pretty good, but I have a friend who was obsessed with it and has ruined it for me - which is pretty ironic given my tendency to absolutely rinse albums I love.

Pulp definitely in the mix for me with This Is Hardcore - though I tend to think Jarvis "some of our best stuff, some of our worst stuff" assessment was pretty much spot on. Her Royal Madgeness also released an absolute belter, some would say her finest album.

Pulp is a good shout, I only know Different Class and His n' Hers. They could make a run for it, it wouldn't take too much to knock Beck off of 5th place.

I don't know what twitter channel this is but if you're talking 1998 on the internet there's gotta be Neutral Milk Hotel everywhere you look.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea must be the most overrated album in existence, at least on the internet.

I would agree. It's a mystery to me how it's reached that status. It's #24 in the all time charts on rateyourmusic.

This is the guy Jens, Richard Shaw. Funnily enough, he's a Stokie, but - as James point out to me a couple of weeks ago - there are some good ones out there.

I nearly forgot Underworld's Beaucoup Fish, which I LOVE.

I might go back and listen to Morcheeba's Big Calm - there are some good tunes on that as I recall, but it does a tend a little towards the coffee table.

Haven't checked rateyourmusic in ages, quick look now shows it's climbed to 23 in the mean time 😆

I think that album at some point was heavily recommended online on specific music websites (that Scaramucci or whatever bloke comes to mind) and generated a cult following since then. Some albums like King Crimson's first aren't well received but grow sort of organically in status over time but with this one it feels forced. The rap albums in there are also ridiculous entries down to either kids posting their favourites or online circlejerk euphoria, Madvillainy e.g. is at best MF Doom's third best album, having Kendrick Lamar twice in a top 20 of all time list has to be a joke too.

Aeroplane is a shit album with two fantastic songs on it, and I think that was enough to distinguish it from a lot of indie albums around that time, most of which had none.

Always thought this song was a banger.

Great build up, interesting lyrical approach, and pacing through out is solid.

Blindfold was one of my favourites in the album. But I think I liked the title track too.

International Velvet by Catatonia might be in the mix as well.

Given this Elliott Smith album a go, I can see it might have its charms, but sonically, it's not really my cup of tea at all - bit too pastoral for me.

It's his major label debut, some consider it to be the sweet spot in his discography. I much prefer his other albums around this time, Either/Or which retained some of the lo-fi elements from his early career, and Figure 8 where he went all in for electrical instrumentation and grand accompaniments.

People confusing cathartic lyrics with music. Artists like John Darnielle and Sun Kil Moon were overrated too in a similar way. And Bob fucking Dylan for that matter.
