I mean it's a bit silly if you're actually German maybe, but if you're Anglophone, words like "Schaufensterpuppen" ("store window mannequins") sound so bleakly Gothic.

hitsville was very good.

stevie wonder's 10 or so best songs were really really great. i could listen to them forever. but i generally dont put on a stevie wonder album and listen to it straight through.

In addition to my (relatively) recent Sonic Youth obsession, I have belatedly discovered what my cousins always knew, which is that Bauhaus were a phenomenal band. Been obsessed with their debut, In The Flat Field for the last few months - Double Dare is one of the best opening tracks ever.

I've always loved the Bauhaus live collection PRESS THE EJECT AND GIVE ME THE TAPE.

Especially the versions of "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores" and "Terror Couple Kill Colonel".

Not to be a complete dick about it, but I find their studio recordings a fraction insipid. I've just never loved them as much. The live anthology is wonderfully raw and showcases their sharp edges.

If you do like Bauhaus then Japan might be worth checking out. Art Goth to Proto-New Romantic, yeah, but with surprisingly similar tones and influences. Murphy ended up getting way more like Sylvian in some of his solo work.

I can get that, I got Press The Eject... on white vinyl for Christmas. I love it, but no Double Dare is a disappointment. Terror Couple Kill Colonel is fantastic, isn't it? I've done a lot of running to that song over the last few months, so addictive.

I can hear so much of Mezzanine era Massive Attack in there, which is probably why I've fallen so hard for them.

And I will give Japan a listen, you are not the first person to have recommended them to me!

The studio version of "Terror Couple" is so mild it gives away it's a pop song, heh.

Interesting comment about Massive Attack, I'd never made that connection but maybe I can hear it?

With Japan, I used to hammer QUIET LIFE round the time I was very into Bauhaus. Late CD era so it was pretty random the stuff you'd pick up. But if you love LOW and Bauhaus now ... gotta be a good shout.

sonic youth is great, especially their early stuff. i think they were more hit or miss after washing machine. still very good though

The first couple of Sonic Youth albums do nothing for me. I find it too dissonant and repetitive. Sister is where I get on the Sonic Youth train.

I LOVE Confusion Is Sex, particularly because of how dissonant it is, but I think Evol and Goo are my favourites. They definitely got a little less interesting the older they got but even 2002's Murray Street is pretty good.

I love Goo, I consider it among the very best 90's alternative albums. It's an interesting record as it's probably the farthest away from where they started. The more structured and the more Kim Gordon-dominated the album, I tend to like it the best.

Murray Street is very good. Everything after that might not be that interesting, but I still will take them over their first three records any day of the week. They are a bridge too far for me.
