The problem with the current situation is that it has never really been about truth. Nearly everyone in the birther movement knew that Obama was born in Hawaii. The point was never to prove that he was not; how can you prove something when there's no evidence? The point was to discredit him and cast doubt publicly on the first black man to ever be elected to the highest office. It's just good old-fashioned racism. By the same token practically everyone, even the inbred evengelical right-wing idiots who make up the majority of the GOP chairs in the house, know that climate change is real. They just don't want to admit it because it costs too much to face the problem.
There has been an idea ever since the campaign trail that if you can just get Trump to damn himself on tape or television people will see what a scum he is, but the simple truth is that they already know. They voted for him not in spite of his comments about assaulting women, but partly because of them. Misogyny is just as real as climate change, just as attractive to some people as the blatant racism in his campaign promises. The people knew that Trump tried to pressure Comey when they were calling the reports in NY Times (the ones Comey today confirmed) for fake news, and they know that Comey was telling the truth today. They know that the reason Trump won't release his taxes is because he doesn't want to give a complete picture of where his business might benefit from the presidency. They know he's a rapist. The people know, and the only ones who care about the truth are too weak to do anything about it.
