The reasons for Trump’s ban on refugees could not be more feeble, and could not be more petty. It serves no actual security purpose. You have a better chance of getting killed by a train, or by your own clothes catching on fire, than by an immigrant terrorist attack. The odds of a refugee killing you in a terrorist strike are about 1 in 3.6 billion. That's about four hundred times less likely than being hit by lightning twice. If you look back at significant terrorist attacks in the US like San Bernardino or the Pulse nightclub shooting or 9/11,exactly none of them would have been prevented by this policy.

And yet security is the weak reed upon which backers of this policy are justifying the enormous cruelty they’re inflicting upon their victims, victims who include 500,000 permanent residents of America and millions more who will be left to die in war zones or to face oppression from their home governments, or to drown in the sea as they fail to flee in makeshift rafts and boats. “Our number one responsibility is to protect the homeland. … This is why we passed bipartisan legislation in the wake of the Paris attacks to pause the intake of refugees,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement praising the refugee ban.

Maybe Ryan and Trump really are this deluded, and really do think in the face of all evidence to the contrary that this measure will somehow make America safer. Maybe they’re motivated by simple bigotry against Muslims.

But the seductive quality of public cruelty is that it needn’t matter. You don’tneed to be motivated by sadism or bigotry or some other base, inhuman impulse. The sheer distance from your victims makes it possible to inflict horrors you never would’ve imagined yourself capable of committing face-to-face.

Cruelty amplified by the fact that the ban came into immediate effect and those tasked with implementing it are confused to the extent that there is chaos amongst their ranks, people being held illegally, protests at airports and legal challenges underway.
Underlining that not only are Trump and his cronies racist they genuinely don't give a f*** about anything other than the optics.

What if a Muslim Iraqi falsely claims to be a Christian would they be allowed into the US? How can you determine someone's faith anyway? Through their name? Surely that's not enough. You could easily falsely claim that you're not muslim anymore and that you've converted?

Thats enough to be viewed with suspicion now, basically a crime. I know, I can feel it. I see it in the glances of people who reflexively look up/ around when his name is called

While our leaders backpedal with mouths full of shaky platitudes, we'd better get on with fighting against essentially the same thing happening in the UK and many EU member states now (as well as here in Australia).

"Concerns about immigration" is nothing more than a centrist code for Trump's agenda.

Firstly he does not represent the views of a majority of those who voted so to say he has a mandate is open to strong argument.
Secondly to say that in a week he has destroyed what was once great about the American dream is quite an emotional overreaction to what is going on - there are Americans who will fight tooth and nail against what he is trying to do and even though the intent is to have people believe that the overlord Trump is going to do as he pleases that's not the reality.

His EOs cannot change the law - they have to operate within the parameters that are already set by Congress and the Constitution - what they will do now is provoke legal argument as to what the law and Constitution state in relation to controls on immigration.
My understanding is that it's an area that is not so clear cut and that challenges to the EO could take months to sort out, in the meantime there would be impedements to the roll out of the policies outlined in the EO.

TBf the ACLU have proven my American dream statement was premature. It's certainly tarnished though.

I disagree about his mandate though. One of the central promises of his campaign was to keep out Muslims. When you run on something like that and win I think that's a mandate. And I think people who voted for hi want it or at least are open to it.

Trump's Islamophobia and anti-migration sentiment has a grip on a broad spectrum of politics in many different countries. "Tweaking" freedom of movement is currently tearing UK Labour apart.

Yeah there may not be that many who will pin their colours to a racist policy like a refugee ban, but there's a larger group that isn't discomfited by, or is willing to be accessory to such a policy. It's a bipartisan reality in Australia.

Y Va, Trump has a mandate. He may not have the popular vote, but an American mandate is granted by the electoral college, not the popular vote.

I found it interesting that the country whose citizens have been most active in terrorism in America escaped the ban. Which, I think, makes this ludicrous policy even more absurd. Others involved in 9/11 were UAE, Egypt, and Afghanistan.
