Vermaelen, Kos and Djourou are all good defenders. None of the 3 are that great in the air or particularly physically dominant, though.

If we were going to sign a player of that type, I'd much prefer Samba to Hangeland, but I don't really want either at the club. In general play they're nothing special at all, and you've got to consider the effect signing someone who excels at defending set-pieces would have on our defending in the other 85 minutes of the game.

More realistically, we need to sign at least one reliable central defender of high quality; better than anyone that we have. I'm personally as concerned about Vermaelen as most people are about Djourou and Koscielny.

I agree on Vermaelen.
Concerned that he will never reliably fit and as a consequence his performance level will drop.

Also agree on Subotic.
He's proper wish list material.

Samba outstrips Hangeland in donkey-dom by a country mile. One of many reasons that Fulham are consistently a decent defensive outfit, and Blackburn are mickey mouse

Vermaelen is really really poor at LB though, just ask Ajax and Belgium fans.

It seems like everyone rates Subotic. Strangely enough, I've never been impressed with him. Only seen him(paid closer attention) 6-7 times, mind.

He's not as good as the hype suggests, but the partnership with Hummels is top class.

Someone on A-M was saying Hummels is a bit of a fairy, a ball playing centreback but not someone who will put his head where it hurts, and although tall is not very strong or good in the air - any truth to that?

Sounds about right. Wouldn't call him a fairy but he's not dominant in the air like Vidic or Terry.

He's a bit like Luiz but with less mistakes and better positioning.

I think there are plenty of good, relatively cheap defensive midfielders and left backs around. Not many of 'em are very famous, because they're two pretty unfashionable positions, but I'm always seeing ones that look quite impressive.

There were quite a few in the world cup for instance. At least half a dozen defensive midfielders that looked like they knew what they were about that I'd barely heard of before the start of the tournament.

You have to take into account that International football is at a much lower level than top flight club football though.

Wishlist centreback for me would be Pepe. Not only is he a tremendous athlete, he's pretty darn cunty and you can tell he hates to get beat. none of our defenders look like they care if we concede.

What's that Bruno Alves upta these days? Would also like Alex.
