I think we need a reliable second goal scorer more than we do additional width and trickery at this point. In 2011, we really have not had anyone other than Robin lok like scoring. We have had lots of possession though.

i think we can go 442 against a lot of teams, given the way they let us have the ball and sit back for the counter. get a wide man.

The News of the World are saying we sent Steve Rowley to the Blackburn-Bolton game on Saturday, to watch Phil Jones. Our interest has been previously confirmed by Steve Kean.

What's the thoughts on him around here?

One of the best young footballers in the country. I think he'd be a cracking signing.

Apparently the NoTW are saying £10m, but I reckon we'd have to pay around double that.

He signed a new contract in February, so £10M would be the least we'd have to pay. From what I've seen of him, I think he's going to be one of the best defenders in the country before long.

before long isn't really good enough. sol campbell was the best CB in the country and one of the best in the world - at the moment we signed him.

Well, free world class centre backs who don't want to move from London don't grow on trees.

So it's either someone good but not world class (like Cahill) or someone young but good with the potential to be world class (like Jones).

That being said, can't say I ever paid much attention to Jones, what's so good about him?

Reads the game very, very well, he's built like a tank, but can still run, twist and turn, and already a leader and organiser. Bit like a young, more athletic John Terry (in style, I'm not necessarily saying he will be as good, although he could well be).

Am I mistaken or can/does he play in midfield too?

Yeah, he's played more football in midfield for Blackburn than he has in defence. He's pretty quick and mobile, decent on the ball, and Blackburn are weak there but strong, with Samba and Nelsen in defence, he wouldn't get games for us in midfield though, not even in a pinch imo.

if we bring in a young guy like him, i'd prefer to ditch one of our young guys and replace with an older head (with real character, not losers like silvestre or squillaci) just to keep the balance right. you can't have an entire position stocked only with youngsters.

of course, that'd mean we'd kill bartley. are you cool with that, ricky?

I reckon that, if we could get Podolski relatively cheaply (£10m or less), he's the type of individual that Wenger could make a star out of.

Podolski would suite us very well. Not a bad shout! Has already proven at the highest level that he can play both through the middle and on the flanks.

Armor

I like Jones a lot, one of the best defenders for his age i have seen in a long while. I'm presuming Squillaci would be the one to make way, and we would end up with a very young quartet in a place you usually should have a good degree of experience. Wouldn't be ideal in that regard.

He looks very much like a natural CB rather than a midfielder but maybe he could be a good Song deputy for a couple of years before switching to defence permanently? Obviously he could be play CB when possible in the meantime too.

As for Podolski, i'm not so sure. He really failed at Munich and then he took an easy return back to Koln, which doesn't say a lot. That said if we got him i wouldn't complain.
