We only need two players to compete at the top level. It really is that simple and marginal. Said two would cost 50-60m though, so forget it.

We'd only be "competing" in the sense that we did in 07/08 or 10/11; 1 injury away from not really being in it anymore.

The right striker would have us on 50 odd points now, inclusive of the shit football we have been playing. A dominant midfielder would just multiply/solidify the effect.

Balotelli and a solid centra midfielder. I can't think of anyone available now, so Diame would do for now. I would drown myself in my own good if we had a Balotelli/Diame level haul. Of course, I am no in danger as long as Wenger calls the shots.

If we beat WHU its only 4 points to catch Spurs, and we get to play them again. The right signings and a top 4 finish would be easily achieved. And thats without a massive signing, just a couple of good signings in the right areas.

With all due respect, QS, we need to get away from that kind of thinking. That's how we ended up with Giroud and friends. We need to spend any money we have on marquee players. No more Girouds to plug the gaps. We have been plugging too long. I would take a gap plugger like Diame, but that's only because our midfield situation is so desperate, but up front, we should not spend if we are not bringing in someone of real super quality

Think we need to make a signing that puts daylight between us and Spurs/ Everton / Liverpool.
That means a striker who would terrify any PL defence and a MF option who is neither a crock nor a novice and who is imnediately up to the physical and mental tests that the Pl poses.

The real difference is you can have a mediocre defensive mid and still be a good team. You can't compete for shit without a top class striker.
