My Thoughts

Strange match as i had a lot of conflicting views.

I thought Xhaka was excellent with the ball till his mistake. Then that red card

Theo scored two, but i felt he was not 100%

Alexis didn't work for me

Overall i thought our quality and belief carried us, but this was a sloppy performance. A better team could have punished us.

We gave away two very cheap goals. That's about it in my opinion. We have in the past too, but the the manner of them was uncharacteristic, even for us.

I thought we pressed really well right from the off. We won the ball so many times in midfield. Sanchez wasn't at his sharpest else we would have scored more.

It was nervy, but all in all, against a team that has given us problems in the recent past and after an international break our performance wasn't all that poor.

Bit of both maybe, but Monreal seems to have regressed a lot at the same time. He managed to look good despite being covered by a non-league player like Flamini last season.

The Xhaka one is an individual brain fart that I can write off as "uncharacteristic" but the 2nd goal had 3 players who should have done better and left back is quickly becoming a problem area for us.

That said Monreal was much better in the first half so I wonder if he's fading in games now. Wenger has to cut him some slack now and start using Gibbs a bit more in rotation.

Gibbs has been good every time he has come on and was also quite good in the League Cup game.

Despite 2 good games out of 10 now, one of which was against Basel, he has looked a long way off being a striker. Kind of reminds me of when the team was doing well last season and Theo was upfront with Sanchez carrying us, only now roles are reversed.

Good little unbeaten run we got going on. Shame we lost to Liverpool on the opening day as otherwise we would have been quite a few matches undefeated as we didn't lose for the like the last 6 weeks of last season.

He may have regressed , difficult for me to say, but what's clear to me is he's been repeatedly hung to dry by Iwobi in particular. Any slow player would struggle against a pacy winger when left in acres of space.

It's no coincidence Monreal has looked less solid since Iwobi got into the team early this year. Sanchez used to cover him better.

I actually said "good foul" out loud when Xhaka made that foul. No way in a million years is that a straight red.

It's something Arteta used to do very well (far more subtly) and we've missed a lot.

That still dosen't contradict my point though , those individual mistakes used to be corrected by his team mates. That's happening less and less with Iwobi in front of him. Iwobi was nowhere to be seen in the 2nd half defensively, left Monreal 1 v 1 with Barrow everytime. And with us being down to 10 men , it made it harder for Coq to cover him. I don't think the Xhaka-Santi partnership is ideal for Monreal

It was a cynical trip (not a tackle ) that we see in every game. Officials were a big disgrace

Also, I don't understand how Cazorla finished the game today. Should have come off for Elneny as soon as Xhaka got sent off.

Only Cazorla and Bellerin covered more ground than Theo.

The game ebbed and flowed and we let Swansea back in far too easily but it was typical of matches after international games.

The Xhaka red card was beyond ridiculous. It was a tactical foul and nothing more. John Moss is a moron and Keith Hackett has in the past called him out for being useless and lacking the respect of players. We should definitely appeal because I'm sure that's a 3 match ban. Barow rolls around like he's been shot and a few minutes later he's back on doing step overs.

Monreals fading form stretches back further than Iwobi solidifying a first team spot. There have been games where Iwobi has allowed teams to hurt Monreal, doubling up on him etc but this wasn't one of them.

If that was a legit red card Arteta would have missed half of every season.

Iwobi has gotten much better at tracking back. Regardless of who it's on the left, only Monreal is to blame for getting beat easily one on one.
