Average players like Amrabat, Elmohamady, and now Barrow have taken Monreal to the cleaners this season. Not to mention Aurier in the CL. He's finished physically.

Thought Mustafi was the one who fell asleep on the second goal. Kos seemed to give him a look and he looked like he put his hand up to apologise. He's great though, I love his crisp passes forward and the two of them are forming a great partnership.

Yep, Kos was right to do so. Mustafi would have been the one who saw the play developing and could have either given Kos a shout or dealt with it himself

It's no coincidence Monreal has looked less solid since Iwobi got into the team early this year. Sanchez used to cover him better.

Maybe, but Monreal has looked pretty pale since the turn of the year which was long before Iwobi got into the first team squad.

There's also the fact that, at the end of the day, you're just not of much use as a fullback if you need an attacking player to constantly cover for you defensively.

Monreal has always been slow and he has played with plenty of dubious teammates in the past. He still managed to make a better fist of it. I like him very much as a player, but it looks to me like he's going to get hit pretty hard by his ongoing physical decline.

Monreal was absolutely terrible, again, for large parts of this game.
Don't really care though in hindsight! We won against a team we have struggled against in recent years, and I thought we had quite a few fantastic offensive moves today. We scored three, but very easily could have scored double that with a bit of luck.

Starting to think the PGMO or whatever the fuck their shitty organisation is called actively encourages refs in England to interfere with the game by making bullshit calls for some reason. Several wrong lino calls in addition to the sending off

And it's not even the worst ref performance today, that'd be Atkinson and his gang of idiots. Cresswell got sent off at Selhurst for two bookings within 30 seconds of each other, both of which never should have been given. Worse even is the second one was the lino's decision for a foul half a yard in front of him, absolutely pathetic

I said good job when Xhaka did that as well. That's a yellow and nothing else, if he goes to ground from behind then it can be red, but not a trip...

Loved this from Ozil today, told them to fight when he got subbed.

That kind of challenge happens all the time in the PL and is always a yellow.

One of those instances where the referee is within his right, according to the rule book, to produce a red card, but the norm is a yellow card. I also think Barrow really hurt himself when he kicked his tripped leg into his other leg, and his writhing on the floor made it look a lot worse than it actually was. I think Wenger is right when he says we won't appeal, because I can't really see how a panel can come to the conclusion that the referee was categorically wrong in his decision here.

It's a red. There's scope for a ref to be lenient but if you look up the rules a tackle from behind can be deemed excessive force.

There is definitely lack of consistency on this though

Yeah, it's a red. Seeing the reruns makes it even clearer. Xhaka's off the ground and tries to hook his leg from behind with his foot. Everyone knows the potential consequences when you tackle like that. The sabotage might have cost Swansea a goal too, who knows. You can't really blame the referee for doing what's well within his rights.

Mustafi may have been a bit slow to react & cover there, but in general he was good again.
And with Kos playing at this level every week, we can be quite happy with our D apart from the left side. And the understanding between the CBs has been growing steadily (the second goal was 99% Monreal being unreal; just as Cech could have done better with the first maybe, but it was all on Xhaka), so there's more to expect. At least to me this is the best we've had in many, many years.

There's one extra which Mustafi gives us as that he can sometimes be the extra man from behind. Yes, Kos sometimes is in the mood to go there, and even Per in the past did a bit of that. But Mustafi is a guy who really feels comfortable going forward, or going anywhere, for that matter.

As for the ref - yes, he could, but he's a real prick for thinking this was a straight red. It's like you don't know what the context really is - this is just not given in the PL (and I think it's good it is like that). Was a stupid foul to commit, but shouldn't have been a red. But ref was a complete ass for the entire afternoon.

Certainly showed that he's a fine footballer. Adds a lot to our game offensively and defensively.

I can't be fussed too much with the red, yes technically the referee can give it but it's not applied very evenly and we were hard done by to have it given against us.

We should've been well clear of them by that point anyway

We could have scored 2 even after the red. It's not even the worst red card we've seen from an Arsenal player in the past 12 months

we could have scored 2, but Swansea went all out for an equaliser - shouldn't even have been in the position to. That tackle was a Diaby vs Newcastle type (lose points just because of that), but we lucked out this time.
