What's so stupid about trying and failing to get them to sign on the cheap last summer is everyone knew that the balance shifted in the player's favour the longer they took. Now, they are reportedly offering of silly money to keep Ozil as Wenger's relationship with Sanchez is gone, i fear.

Also, any top player approached now is going to demand top dollar and not what Wenger thinks is fair.

Who said they were demanding anything less last summer? Their respective agents are not idiots. There's no incentive for them to sign early unless their demands are met.

As for what they are reportedly doing, the newspapers know fuck all. A few months ago the Mirror had two articles published on the same day with contradictory information on it.

They were definitely asking for similar sums last season, but Arsenal don't do 'ahead of the curve'. We're years after the rest of the market, and only grumpily adjust to it when it's about to move up a level.

It's really unfortunate that we don't have a single person in the entire organisation who's willing to be proactive. We refused to pay Özil and Sanchez top of the market wages back when the negotiations were mostly about money. A year later we're suddenly able to pony up the cash only to realise that it's not just about the money for them anymore.

There's nothing wrong with negotiating but our particular method seems to be to draw a line in the sand that in effect stalls negotiations, only to concede later on down the line when we're desperate, like we do with Theo every 3 years.

Ultimately if we aren't willing to offer 250k on at least one player, we won't attract the best talent.

I couldn't agree more and would add that Wenger's list of top players he tried, but ultimately failed, to sign is proof enough that this stalling tactic does not work.

Just read a story on goal.com with Ozil saying that him staying is not dependent on Wenger staying.

Yep. Every single person working at board level needs to be fired if we ever sell a player to a domestic rival again regardless of the fee. The whole bloody club is defined by compromise. This is why we always lose.
