Should be noted this election there was a lot of tactical voting. Many just wanted the conservatives out and were prepared to vote for other parties to achieve that. That’s how imo Lib Dem’s managed to take so many seats from the conservatives.

The electoral system affects the way people vote so these sort of analyses always need to be taken with a large pinch of salt. That result does look a lot more democratic to me though.

Won't work anyway - these measures punish the individuals, often at random, for purely performative reasons.

If they were actually serious, they'd clamp down harder on the businesses that employ them. At the moment, the only consequence is that offending businesses have to pay a 60k fine in the off chance they get caught and the fine is more or less equal to the wages that those businesses have saved on by paying bottom of the market rates over the past few years anyway.

Labour lurching to the right ostensibly to reduce its vulnerability to right wing populism will just encourage Reform and other parties further to the right to greater extremes. It's happened here. These negative, concessional programmes fail.

Burnwinter I stopped voting or even really caring a while ago, not to say I don't follow the news anymore but not nearly with the same verve and interest I used to. Democracy is utterly dead, not that it's the end of the world when you look at the last voting results in this country

Black is our version of the Tories, dark blue is to the right of that and blue is extreme far right. I understand that most of these people in the bottom of their hearts are mostly decent folk but as I age I find it harder to care when they vote for parties who literally want me out the country, wouldn't be any different to saying you gotta sympathise with ISIS fighters as they are deeply misguided and have legitimate grievances (and they actually do much more so)

I'll still live here and I don't mind it but people like Starmer who come in with praise in advance for not being a Tory lol that's just more confirmation for my inner emigration. Make money in this here country and send it back home or to Palestine or literally any other third world country, these guys can keep their democracy and superior liberal society and shove it.

Reducing the reliance on foreign born workers isn’t a bad thing if it’s not just a gimmick. It’s perhaps the only real grown up solution to cutting down on immigration numbers.

The raids have never been anything more than photo ops… hopefully Cooper won’t be seen in a hi vis vest accompanying officers with the press invited.

jones Amen. Where I live I'm one of the ingroup. Where I grew up the attitude taken to the rest of "Australia" is much the same as "Australia"'s to the greater world: "got mine, keep out". It's a contradictory attitude sustained despite the dependence of every socioeconomic norm on continued migration.

In a happy future, this bordered state of affairs, with its citizenship and passports and visas and suffrage and "human rights" and tariffs and debts and "reconstructions" and "bailouts" and so forth would be entirely neutered, and seen in retrospect the way it has been: a world-historical abomination as bad as or worse than chattel slavery.

Really horrible scenes in Southport today. I've said before there is something bubbling under the surface in this country, things are not right.

The killing of those girls at a dance camp was sickening, I've been dropping my kids off to a various camps at their school this holiday so those deaths really shook me. What on earth could possess someone to go and kill young children with a knife in that way, their photos have been released today and literally breaks my heart to look at.

Then you got these fucking yobs burning down police vans, at least let the families greave for fucks sake. The facts haven't even come out yet and people are putting blame on others.
