At any rate, I think there's sufficient slack that a competent government could get some good outcomes. Even relative to GDP per capita, some of the public service outcomes are worse than they should be - particularly outside of London and the home counties.

To be clear - the world's moved on since 2010 and there was a lot that was wrong. Just wanted to say that a fair number of people would settle for a Starmer that is slippery and compromises on some of his positions as long as the some key items are solved domestically.

For me, there's far more synergy between neoliberalism and third way Labor than there are differences, particularly when you look at the bigger picture and longer term implications for politics, economics, governance, global affairs etc.

Coombs To a large extent, yes. Though I believe there are also some tangible differences in terms of social policy and service delivery which Mirth is alluding to. Put it this way, both professionally as a social worker and personally as a service user, I would much prefer the 'realities' of Third Way to those of neoliberalism, even though as an academic I'm concerned with the enduring and destructive effects of their shared mentalities.

The main issue with the NHS isn't funding but the way it is run. It is surprising to me that Labour's Wes Streeting has come out and said major reforms are needed whereas the Tories don't seem to have any answer for anything right now. There is a lot of money going in and not enough reaching where it needs to, it is a joke they don't have a single solution to this

Also GPs are taking the fucking piss, these guys are doing bare minimum and all the workload is falling onto Hospitals who can barely cope with their usual work.

Have you got anything to back that up Jazz? My perception and experience isn't that GPs are doing the bare minimum in most cases.

Just from what I hear from those who are GPs themselves and others who work in the NHS,

You can't get an appointment face to face any more, yet if you walk into a practice there are usually empty waiting rooms. My practice won't even let you book an appointment unless you call at 8am. They want you to fill some online form first and the duty Dr might then call if you're lucky.

About 3 different GPs I know have all switched to part time and for them it was a lifestyle choice. Which is fair enough but surely the practices should maintain minimum staffing levels in order to provide an acceptable level of service? I know 3 different people who have been diagnosed with cancer in the last 2 years, all of them the signs were missed by GPs. Two of them got diagnosed in A&E because they became so unwell and had to go in.

These are my own views and am happy to be proven wrong. But I think the attitude of some GPs are putting a lot of pressure on Hospitals.

To be honest, I recognise a bit of that through my own experience and that of my friends. One of my best mates lost both his parents within 8 months of each other between autumn 2021 and May last year. His dad had been diagnosed with liver cancer a year and a half before he died, but we didn't even know his mum was ill until about 5 days before she died. Although I'm pretty sure my mate knew a while before he told us what was going on, he did also say he felt his mum had very much slipped through the cracks in terms of being seen early enough to be helped.

Conversely, I actually have been to my doctor's this week in relation to my blood pressure (fucking Arsenal), they called me in for a check up and now are doing further testing. But I was surprised to see actual people in the waiting room. I sort of assumed it was all consultation form and phone based appointments now too.

Went down the Teddington Conservative club to play snooker this afternoon. They may not be able to run a country, but they sure can look after a snooker table.

Not my preferred choice of venue, but at £2 p/hr it's difficult to argue.

Suella Braveman sacked and James Cleverely takes over. She wasn't going to deliver on any of her promises, so she's basically trying to get herself get sacked. That way it looks like the higher ups got rid while she was trying to sort issues out. Like Priti Patel, all talk.

In another twist David Cameron is back as foreign secretary! Did not see that one coming.
