Agreed Y va. I think there will be some initial friction too, but on the other hand we don't have much to lose at the moment. The midfield we have right now isn't working and both Xhaka and Ramsey need games. Better to bring them up to speed as soon as possible and hope that some form of partnership will have crystallized by the time we enter the Christmas period.

If not we really need to make an emergency signing.

A physically robust player that needs to be as technically and creatively gifted as Santi, adaptive enough to slot straight into our midfield and restore some sort of order in terms of moving the ball from defence to attack, not the type of player usually available as an emergency signing.

Yeah, it's tricky. I don't think we need someone particularly physical though. We've made working midfields out of Ramsey and Arteta in the past. What we lack right now is someone experienced who can guide all those projects we have running around. Ideally that would be Ramsey, but he himself has been plagued by injuries and layoffs and hasn't settled into an obvious role. I feel we need an older head who can come in and assume some responsibility.

I suggested in the transfer section that we'd take a look at a shorter deal for Cabaye who seems to be available in January. In a lot of ways he's in a similar situation to Arteta when we bought him. Maybe he'd relish the challenge, at least for a few months so we can make it through the season.

Hadn't thought about Cabaye - he knows the league, has some class, yeah on paper it looks a decent proposal.

Oh right. Yeah, we definitely need someone who can start right away. We can't afford to waste a month or two on bringing people up to speed.

I too think, that Xhaka - Ramsey is definitely the way to go now. First of all, Xhaka is the only one who offers a long ball = Walcott, Özil and Alexis benefit from it. Ramsey must now stake his claim at midfield, if he is ever to prove himself there. If he cant do it now, we might as well just sell him in the summer. Elneny would be Ramsey-lite solution in case we need to rotate and Coquelin should only be used in case we want to play a very defensive game in big away games or be used as a sub to shore up the midfield.

Unfortunately, im very fucking sure, that Wenger sees Coquelin as first choice midfielder and other 3 will have to pair up with him. Woeful.

Come to think of it, it's insane that we are still hugely dependent on a midfielder who's going to be 32 in a few days time. It's been 2 going 3 seasons and we have yet to function without Cazorla in our system. Every bloody time he gets injured we pretty much goes to pieces.

Looking at his stats, it's really difficult to replace him with any of our other options. With these sort of output, only Modric and Verratti comes close to it. No other team is so dependent on a CM creating chances and passing through the lines, not sure how Wenger is finding it so difficult.

Also... no way I'd start Xhaka + Ramsey. Both players who don't hold the ball well enough under pressure.

For me Xhaka is the only real solution, external or internal. I thought he showed glimpses of dominating the midfield against Bournemouth. Displayed some precision passing from deep and won more tackles (8 ) and more ball recoveries (14) than anyone else in the league last weekend. I also think you can play him with any of the other centre mid options. He's had his time to adapt, Wenger needs to throw him in the deep end now and let the team adapt to him.

General

When he came on against Southampton, you could immediately see the ball was moving forward a lot more as opposed to sideways and backwards. He's very careful in possession unlike Ramsey and he just needs the opportunity to build momentum. I can somewhat understand why Wenger is holding him back because there is still a long season ahead but there has been no logic to some of the team selections. It's a bit like Elneny when he was bought last season. Flamini kept getting games and Wenger wouldn't play him. All of a sudden Wenger starts playing him regularly.

Bold Tone

His forward passing is good but that is not the only job of a CM.
He needs a partner who fills in the gaps and none out of Ramsey, Coquelin and Elneny can do it.
Wilshere would be even worse as he makes Xhaka look like Usain Bolt.
I'm of the opinion Wenger planned for a Cazorla replacement and it hasn't worked.
No point fretting, the solution is to change the system to utilise the players' strengths better.

What do you mean by fill the gaps? What are they specifically? Santi isn't exactly any more mobile than Xhaka was, less so in fact. Xhaka covers a lot more ground. Xhaka is better defensively too.

With Xhaka, you need a midfielder alongside him who is mobile and fast enough to cover a lot of ground, Coquelin is that player.

Coquelin is too defensive minded to play alongside Xhaka for me. In theory Ramsey should be his perfect partner but Ramsey really fucking needs to up his game significantly.

Ramsey will come good in my opinion, if given a run of games in the central midfield box to box role alongside Xhaka. He also needs to stay fit though.

Kante and Matic are not particularly fast but they have positional discipline and get about. Pace is not everything.

Even at his very best, he's too careless in possession and it opens doors for the opposition even in games we are easily on top. He either drops and clogs up the midfield or causes a break down of attacks with his pointless flicks and back heels. We basically need to give him a free role like Wales do and we have better players for that. He's ok on the wings with Bellerin's pace behind him and I think this is where Wenger will continue to play him. Technically he is the most limited out of all our midfield options.
