He confirmed that he had first spoken to Arsene Wenger "a year ago", adding: "I was almost speechless when he called."

It was the possibility of working with the Arsenal manager that ultimately swayed Xhaka, who was also reported to be a target for Liverpool and last year turned down a move to Atletico Madrid.

"Arsène is a legend for me," he said. "I often had him as a manager on the PlayStation. He’s a gentleman, full stop."

This explains the come and get me plea last summer.

I want to see how good he is on the ball under pressure, how good his short passing is, and how well he can control midfield in possession. He has a lot of qualities but we need a calming presence on this team full of headless chickens.

It also explains why he probably never wins on PlayStation.  😆

Nevermind, I thought Elneny played for Schweiz for some reason. The Basel connection fooled me.

Jesus Klaus, your standards are slipping. I wouldn't say it's quite a Rexian slide but that's the direction you're headed.

I have a feeling he'll be good on counters.

How inconsiderate are you, Biggus? No offence, but that's just a douchebag move. Other forums would have you banned for that.

Hey, Big, please remove that.

Okay Claudius, but it has already been shown on TV, I thought it was common knowledge and part of popular culture unless you're in a coma.

Many of us practically are

If he continues to develop the way he has done over the past four years, he will be an Arsenal captain in the making. Towards the end of the 2014-15 season he played nine games with a broken rib, initially with special protection and painkillers before ditching them too and just playing through the pain. “At times, it hurt like hell,” he told Der Express , “but that was mainly when I was lying on the sofa at home. But when I was playing I was so focused I wasn’t that interested in my broken rib. And we had to qualify for the Champions League.”

It is an attitude and never-say-die will that have perhaps been missing at Arsenal for the past few years. One player will not change the whole mentality of a squad but Xhaka proved at Gladbach that he can inspire his team-mates with his enthusiasm and work rate.

Wenger has got himself a 23-year-old leader. He may need a few more to win that elusive Premier League title but at least it is a step in the right direction.

some old school grit right there

from a good piece in the guardian

This guy and El Neny give me life. Ozil will never have to track back again. He can focus on learning to score a goal or two.

Nice read, thanks mate.

Can't find a bad word about the guy so far.

Indeed it was US, it's a show on TV you may have heard of it.

Stylistically, Xhaka is probably most similar to Flamini, an all-action defensive midfielder, but he offers a blend of attributes and is excellent at keeping possession, rather than simply regaining it.

What's Cox smoking there?

He's trying to say "Flamini but can actually pass" but isn't coming off particularly artful in doing so. And the comparison itself isn't too clever either, they don't seem that similar at all to me
