This thread is becoming very entertaining. I've only been to Munich in Germany and it was lovely for a tourist. So Frankfurt must be really something. I'll have to add it to my list.

München is famous in Germany for being the nicest city if it weren't for all the people in it. The climate is decent for German standards, beer if you're into it is really good but the people are basically Germany's Parisians. It's also the only city even more expensive than Frankfurt in the country.

Was mostly joking (although the hurt Londoner reactions kept me going) but if you do add Frankfurt to your list make sure to visit the hiking trails, recreational areas, wine roads etc in the region surrounding the city - in that aspect London genuinely doesn't compare.

Jones how long have you been in Frankfurt for?

I've only done Hamburg for a stag... So all I saw was a stripper and a guy in a Borat mankini on a boat.

Can't remember where I read it but tech is now a bigger employer than banking/insurance in London. The finance sector is all legacy (depending on how you classify fintech) but London's growth these days is mainly from tech and a few others.

I love how two of Jones' three selling points or Frankfurt initially were the airport and areas outside the city itself. Ringing endorsement 😆

Frankfurt hasn't been on my radar really but I have wanted to visit Berlin and a few other German cities/towns for a while.

In my experience the people of Munich have been fairly friendly, as friendly as I'd expect in a large city. We did stay outside the main city centre area so perhaps getting into the suburbs and engaging with locals a bit more made a difference.

Born and raised here. Hamburg's Reeperbahn has its charms for some tourists but generally pretty boring city, didn't miss all that much there. Germany and most of Europe really rank pretty low for tourist destination anyway.

Paris fwiw is much better than its rep, blows the rest of Europe out the water for art and domestic dining. Like the rest of France mostly useless if you don't speak the language though.

The airport part was clearly in jest 😆 having a hub airport nearby is great but I was taking the piss out of how airports always an overblown role in terms of "ranking" cities. The areas around the city however do register though imo, Frankfurt is a very condensed city (practical with public transport, not needing a car etc) with loads of nature nearby. In Germany you generally don't talk about just the city but the metropolitan area Rhein Main region (including Mainz, Offenbach, Darmstadt etc) which is heavily influenced/centred around Frankfurt.

Also about endorsements. I'm sure I'm not hearing this from you??

Yeah Paris is awesome, I lived/studied there for a semester as part of my uni year abroad.

Wife is French so I go to Nice often, and am here now on hol. Though checking the transfer forum every half an hour doesn't make it feel like it 😆

Interesting point about city/metropolitan area. Can't say I've ever noticed airports featuring too highly when I've seen discussion about ranking cities though. Perhaps it's more for issues such as this where top cities are being ranked against each other at the top end, rather than being discussed more generally.

You've got me on the Glasgow point. Glaswegian's paying into pensions is the greatest scam the Government and pension funds ever pulled.

Glasgow is a great city for tourists though. Similar to what you say about Frankfurt - decent public transport (as far as tourism goes), close to spectacular nature, wide variety of arts and cultural exhibits. Close enough to Edinburgh to visit but far enough to avoid headaches from their incessant bagpipes.

To be fair I heard plenty good about Glasgow, definitely wanted to visit Glasgow and Islay at some point but would have to wait until the hottest day of the year for it to be bearable. Edinburgh would've been interesting too to visit the pub where Begbie glassed that poor lassie.

Really? Just been to both Cities recently. As a neutral tourist I very much prefers London. More things to do, cleaner and amenities more modern. Most importantly the food is nicer in London for me.

Stayed in Nice for the Monaco GP - lovely place. Truly felt relaxed everywhere there. Felt like holidaying back in the late 80s!
