Actually we were - Chapman built a squad to win the title, and in doing so he paid top dollar for the players he wanted and broke the transfer record more than once in doing so. In many ways that team were the fore runners of what we later saw with the likes of CFC and MC in the PL era.

Good player but a firm no. Misses more than 50% of matches through injury if you look at his spell at bayern.

We cant afford paying big wages to players who are unreliable fitness-wise.

I think the ship’s sailed on Sabitzer. He’s getting on the older side. Let Liverpool have him if they’re still trying to extract value from current stars. We have lots of younger options who are talented and will build value

He's currently 26. It used to be a players peak years at top level performance were 27-31.

I’m looking from a resale standpoint. It would be fine if we hadn’t messed up the rest of our squad with guys like Willian. Unfortunately, we can’t keep repeating the mistakes that took us down to 10th in the league, building a squad where we keep spending and never selling. It’s unsustainable. So we need to build up our stock of high quality 22-25 year old players who can grow with us. And then we can sell some of them off as they hit 28-29. More Pépé’s and Gabriel’s.

Aye this is what i wanted us to do 3 years back and got slated that you can't build with youths. As people were still traumatised by the wenger youth project potentially not considering that we were picking up ultra cheap younger players and selling a player a year. That was destined for failure. While in general future planing is always an excellent idea. It'd be tricky to start another rebuild next year we need to extract something from this team next season.

I cant imagine we'll have much of a transfer budget but I could be wrong. Next season might be more about intigrating Martinelli, Partey and Saliba into the side and ESR having his first season as a starter. And replacing bellerin with someone a bit more dynamic. Hopefully selling Douzi and Torriera but I can't imagine we'll get a ton for either of them. Torrria had a brillaint 6 months of form and then the rumours started about him not being ahppy in england and his form started to drop then. We really needed to flip him faster, we could have actually made a profit.One good thing about arteta is he's quick to move on the players that don't want to be here.

There are some who get stuck to the idea that your team must be filled with peak age players. While that is ideal, you can't just go out and buy 11 peak age players, because they'll play for 3 years and expire and leave you with an empty balance sheet. You need to exactly what you advocate and build a group of players together. As some of them get older, you need to pick from amongst them which ones you'll ride out and which ones you'll resell to replenish the squad.
Active asset management basically. We've been abject at this, buying all these old defenders and watching them decline. Or just letting peak age players' contracts expire, leaving us with nothing.

I don't think buying players with re-sale in mind is the way the go, we're not Dortmund. You're not going to see Liverpool shipping off Salah, Mane, Henderson or VVD.

If you do things right, you don't need to sell to buy anyway. If we're serious about giving the academy kids a chance then that's what needs to be in mind when you buy players. The likes of Partey and Sabitzer will be in their 30s in 4 years, Ceballos would be 28 if we signed him too. Azeez and Patino would be 22 and 21 respectively (or if they turn out to not be good enough sign others of that age who are). Age/experience wise that's a midfield with a very good balance.

It's about protecting longterm squad value. You often see Liverpool listed as having the second most valuable squad in the world. A lot of that value is sitting in 28-29 year old players (VVD, Firmino, Mane and Salah). If Liverpool doesn't manage their rotation, that value will evaporate in the next 2-3 years and they will no longer have the 2nd most valuable squad in the world. In the absence of Covid-19, I think Pool would've easily sold at least 1-2 of those players in the next 2 summers to reinvest in the squad. Covid-19 will give them a rethink.

So the point is not to think about yourself as a selling club. It's trying to balance how to keep the highest possible squad value while having a balanced squad that can compete. That requires buying and selling - unless you're City.

Liverpool selling their star players at the right time is a large part of the season they got where they did. They reinvested the funds well and continued to build.

Yup. But you need to be able to both sell well and buy well. Spurs once sold Bale for 80m and went and bought various rubbish players. That money went up in smoke.

Leicester, on the other hand, kept selling their best players to teams like United and Chelsea, but have kept pace with them through smart replacements.
